I was re-reading Like a Mighty Army to get a running start on Hells Foundations Quiver when it occurred to me that Lt Charlz Sheltyn needs to be fitted with a false tooth that has SNARC with full audio visual and tracking capabilities built into it. It would be easy to follow him into the hard core Temple Loyalist and maybe even pick up some of the Rakurai terrorist on the edge of the crowd when the Loyalists meet.
I know that these people are not part of any existing group but the guy that started riot in which the plans for the steam engine was stolen, was reported to be keeping tabs on the hard core locals so he could use them when the time was right. At the very least, the chance to identify the hard core and to track their activities more closely presents an opportunity too good to pass up. Just my 2 ₵ Just my 2 ₡ worth

I still think they should make a big deal out of the plans for the Analytic Engine and get it stolen by the Go4... That would be so amusing to watch... |

Not a bad idea but... the computer that Alan Truing used in WWII were as big as a small house; the computers that NASA used to send men to the moon were as large as a room and both used punch cards. The first computers I used required me to save everything I was working on 5.5 inch floppy disks before I shut down for the night, so the likelihood that there could be a reasonable progression that Merlin seems to be intent to provide cannot hold up. Now, if the intent was to infiltrate the temple with higher tech, then there could be any thing to serve as a Trojan Horse and if it is there, then it could send signal to someone outside of the blast zone if that signal trips the orbital system.
My thought with the first post here is to infiltrate the terror cells. In Like a Mighty Army, after Iris and Hector are attacked, the discussion included the possibility of facial recognition software to find the hard core Langhorne Rakurai team members. Just my two cents

Mechanical Computing is attainable without electricity. It also requires that the measurements be incredibly tight and the machining be exceptionally fine. If they get it working then the Go4 will have moved technology forward and helped to train more people on how to think... if not - they have still spent a small fortune that they might have spent on something more useful... Either option is a winner... |

How could fluidic computing fit in? In any case, note the need for some form of programming and the theories that allow it. Douglas Hvistendahl

Using facerecognition to find the inquisitor in chief second in command then use a snark or something else to see/hear everything around him.
That would put brakes to every inquisition action : rakurai, rakuraisword, assassinations attempt, spywork, etc. Keeping the spying device in a "passive" listening mode would keep it from detection. Can I have a treecat RFC?

We already know who the second in command is, our good friend Archbishop William Rayno. Quite frankly the idea of fitting a parasitic SNARC bug on his neck at the back of his cowl when he wanders out of the temple and then seeing what happens to it and him when he wanders back in amuses me no end. Imagine if some defensive system of the temple itself attacked him and Clyntahn was suddenly confronted with the specter that his own number two was a heretic. Ah the fun writes itself at that point. And if the temple didn't react then let the exploration begin. Frankly Merlin has been way too cautious in dealing with this issue. Finding a likely patsy to Guinea Pig a penetration of the temple systems is way overdue, as any good systems hacker would tell you. Well maybe in HFQ, I can only hope. How many days till the book is out? Cheers; Larry |

now that is an excellent plan! as you say clynthan's face if his number 2 is shown to have been a heretic! damn it I need to see that happen now. doubt RFC is going to go down that road which is a pity. hopefully the comeuppance he does inflict will be equally epic. |

You know that WOULD be fascinating, and it follows the strategy that Merlin et.al. tried to use with the rifles. On a more practical note Howsmyn, his engineers and the folks at the Imperial College should be introduced to the wonderful toy, the slide rule, assuming they haven't already. Wonderful toys are slip sticks, a real engineers friend before computers. Also to introduced the idea of stored programs and such the Jaqcuard Loom suggests itself. Worked for us. Coupled to a pneumatic fluid processor (And Howsmyn is working with compressed air already...) Hmmmm, ya know that just might work. Might have to punch the cards from thin steel as opposed to paper for processing with compressed air but.... Cheers; Larry P.S. Well whatyaknow Here's a how to http://hydraulicspneumatics.com/200/Tec ... aticValves and some of the commercial devices are at http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/1663808.pdf Fascinating! |

OK I get that. I bet we would see quite a few modern applications designed differently if the resources were available differently at the time they were designed. Some of these variations might be offered on Safehold just as food for thought.
