SPOILER!!!
SPOILER!!! SPOILER!!! Go to the Amazon Preview (hardcover edition, click on the cover "Look Inside") and search for Kaudzhu Narrows (or HFQ). The only sections that are actually previewed are in the back of the book in the "Character" section, but if you read carefully it looks like Merlin (and Nimue) are going to sink the prisoner transports (that's me reading between the lines). The prisoners seem to be from a sea battle at Kaudzhu Narrows. |

SPOILER!!
Also, another Topic on the cover art had a spoiler from someone who had an advance copy and said the cover was accurate and happened almost exactly as shown. |

!SPOILER! (Not sure if it needs stated, since it is in the title)
I find that interesting because didn't Merlin have that notion with the first batch of Charisian prisoners with Manthyr? Since we are on the topic of spoilers, it may also be in retribution for the murder of Thirsk's family/attempted murder... or to help cover the escape.. In the character section I read that Hektor is CO of the ship to rescue Thirsk's family, and that one of his daughters is noted to have her mother deceased, and a relative is noted to be orphaned. It would appear to me that he must have overstepped some boundary and him being shot may be a ploy, he was not noted to be deceased, MIA, or KIA in the character section... Granted I will need to check textev to confirm the character information at the end of the books if they note characters that have died during the book. |

Actually, yes, the Inner Circle all had a discussion about doing that, but decided not to based on revealing too much and the chance of detection from orbit close to the Temple.
Maybe this time they are far enough away that is not as much a concern AND having seen the results the first time they are too pissed off to allow it to happen a second time. As for Thirsk, I read a lot in the Characters section, but couldn't make up my mind whether his family actually got out or not and didn't see enough evidence to say Thirsk lived or died (though the author seems to have strongly stated he was going to die - see snippet index). I do think Hector does try to rescue them, but not clear if he succeeded. |

I would like to think that what the author "says" is not always what he "says"....
For instance, in the glossary it notes that the Gbaba have destroy the Terran Federation, 'so far as is known'... it is that wiggle room I am clinging to that Thirsk is still alive, and having escaped from the murderous Schuelerites that snuck into his home to kill his entire family, runs into none other than Mab..... Oh please let that be the case.... |

What I managed to read is (in summary):
1. OWL retrofitted one of the skimmers with a couple of things that Merlin uses. 2. Thirsk was shot in the (left?) shoulder by someone and the Inner Circle discuss why the shooter did what he did. 3. Thirsk believes the Inquisition killed his family -- claiming that Heretics did it but they are alive. Nimue leads them to safety form what I've seen. 4. Merlin goes to Thirsk right at teh end of the book. |

I'm afraid that the snippet Himself tossed out so long ago is just what it looks like it is. Alhvyn shooting Thirsk out of his chair. What happens afterwards, now...
One useful trick with the Look Inside: if you search on a character name [such as, say, Kahpahr, say...] it will give you page numbers and the context of the hit, but - usually - not let you actually open the page. That context is as much as 8-10 words each side of the search term, and is enough to string together an analysis of the action. Well, sometimes anyway. I'm pretty sure that I know Thirsk's and Kahpahr's fates, but am not so sure of how Hektor gets on with the family. Although position analysis of one minute fragment suggests that his op is tied to whatever is being done about the prisoners and may actually be part of it. A major reason why stringing text fragments together provides so much info is that the Back Matter - the Glossary and Cast of Characters - isn't excluded when you do a search, so I've been able to tickle out a lot of it. And the Cast contains a _lot_ of spoiler info in it's explanations of otherwise minor persons. Schuelerites, for example... several of them are placed in a context that allows another text fragment to explain the cover.

I haven't checked the other fragments closely, just figured that if there was anywhere they could use weapons against some ships, it would be one where they would want no survivors. Sinking POW transports AND any escorts at night in what looks like a storm sounds like a good bet.
I'm making the assumption that there's no way for the Charisian Navy to catch those transports and stop them. I'm also projecting that Merlin is getting angrier at his inability to stop the atrocities and will start doing more when he can. Of course, aiding Hector in making an escape by sinking a pursuer would be another, but my bet is on sinking POW transports. |

I didn't do the search. I went backwards from the characters lists and the actual page text was included. Kahpahr shoots Thirsk and claims to be a Charisian spy to save Thirsk. On pages 643-645 the Inner Circle are discussing things and it says:
"...the bullet had struck Thirsk in the bony part of the left shoulder, mushroomed and partially disintegrated." The boat we see Merlin/Nimue on is a fishing boat. Merlin uses a modified skimmer with an autocannon and a 500lbs bomb after Nimue gets Thirsk's family. |

OK, sounds like you've done a better job of piecing together the fragments.
Looks like I'm wrong, and the cover is about rescuing Thirsk's family. I kinda hope something is done about the POWs, I'd really hate for them to end up in Zion. I did do a search on POWs and on Kaudzhu and Clyntahn and Rayno do apparently have a big discussion about the "victory" at Kaudzhu Narrows. But after my last speculation failed due to not taking pains to read enough fragments, I think I'll leave off further premature speculation |
