It is the "system" whether it's loaded with gas or expended, that is covered by the "equipment clause. The oversized "disposal" hatches are another point that would have to be dealt with.

The hatches are not a problem at all. Moves cargo in and out just like every other freighter out there.

And if you can't figure out how to smash something... May I suggest a few caveman rituals for enlightenment? Quite cathartic.

Quarters are easy to remove and just the thing for unskilled labor to be set to do as something to productive and needed at the same time.

Ta da, you know have a cargo ship.

YOu will note the freighter in SoSag, carried both freight and human cargo at different times. Obviously the design had already been specialized to reconfigure internally easily.

Yes, it was probably specialized to reconfigure internally easily. But the text is also quite clear that even reconfigured, slave ship would fail the equipment clause and would be called slave ships and seized. David has said that it is not possible to turn a slave ship into a legitimate freighter without reconstructing the interior extensively. Apparently it takes a lot more conversion than you think.

If slave ships are easy to reconfigure, why aren't they when no slaves are aboard or expected? :?

1) Where
2) Of course one will strip the interior. That is easy. Blowing out internal non structural walls is absurdly easy no matter what the construction is as the internal volume was already there to begin with before being divided. As the ship in question was modified using a standard freighter to begin with.

Hello: the MARIANNE was already being used as a cargo hauler to begin with..... IT just happened to have a gas system pushing folks to the cargo bay doors which are just normal cargo bay doors.

Harold, the equipment clause is for the gas system... which dumps into the existing ventilation ducts. Read SoSag, Crown of Slaves for clearer definitions of the equipment clause. A very good description is in Crown of Slaves when taking the ship.

Last I checked, slaves are not given 5 ***** Star accommodations, meaning any walls that are present will be paper thin meeting bare minimum reqs and therefore absurdly easy to remove.

I'm with the "don't destroy the slaving ships" side. They'd be useful for faciliating emigration from Mesa - obviously, with the gas system disabled and carrying fewer people than they would slaves.

A lot of shipping is currently locked down in manticore, so the could be used to ship slaves off of Mesa to friendlier territory. Manticore needs only take and hold that system, for as long as it takes for the Andries to redeploy. That way the league have fewer reasons to interfere.

Who says they aren't?

Besides, the text also states that you can still tell that it is a slaver after reconfiguring, and can still charge them with the equipment clause.

An interesting idea. But I wonder about the reaction.

"Come on aboard. We want to move you to another planet, where you can live a safe and secure life. What? Yes, this was a slave ship. But don't worry, it isn't any more. Come on in."

It occurs to me now that we may be using different definitions of "reconfigure". I meant it in the sense of setting the ship up to carry normal cargo. The Marianne did that. Perhaps you are using "reconfigure" to mean "get rid of all the slaving equipment". If that's what you mean, then I agree with you. In fact, that was exactly my point--you can set up a slave ship to carry cargo, but you cannot easily convert it into a legitimate cargo ship that does not fail the equipment clause.

It's also the layout of the slave quarters with the doors that automatically pop open when the gas is applied to herd people to the empty cargo bays with big exterior doors.

Of course the easiest way to "fix" that is to pop the circuit breakers for the remote door openers and add a better lock on the final doors to the cargo hold so they can't be inadvertently opened.
