It would be so cool if Ahlverez was caught between Hanth and the river with a river boat blocking his crossing that a Parley met and Slater was in the Allies side of the Parley.
I am not young enough to know everything!

Hi Dwileye13,
Why? Ahlverez would probably try to shoot him since he realised he was a plant a while back, and that could start a shootout with all the wrong things happening. Granted RFC doesn't or more accurately didn't have time to put such a scene in HFQ, although Ahbraim Zhevons might be there and admit Slaytyr is a distant relative if Ahlverez asks because he sees some family resemnblance. My strong impression is that Ahlverez is going home to be a hero and a rather major player in what happens in Dohlar [ including probably rescuing Thirsk's daughters and their families] when the ICN blockades its west coast etc, and EHM or DE come down from the Daivyn after destroying Kaitswyrth to remonstrate with King Rahnyld IV. A regency would seem to be in order, to save the kingdom. Especially if the Dohlar public is drowned in the revelations of the temple corruption that may be published after the recent allied victories, like the Emancipation Proclamation after Antietam, which has been mentioned a time or two here. L

I can't speak for you, Lyonheart, but I'd love to see the expression on Ahlverez's face when he saw Slaytyr standing next to Hanth and realized that he'd been played... Granted, it's not the most tactful way of doing things, especially if you want the enemy to trade in his guns for the promise of food and humane treatment. But seeing the bad guys blow a gasket is one of our guilty pleasures! I'll grant that Ahlverez isn't a bad guy. Just like Thirsk, he needs a better cause to serve, or a better king, which the ICN will soon provide. Can you say "Regency Council?" "Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear. |

The only thing that would be more hilarious is having Slayter bring Alverez the news that Hanth is asking for his surrender. While that may require Merlin to Matrix-dodge some bullets, the sheer comedic effect may well be worth it.

Or gunslinger draw and shoot pistols out of the hands of Ahlvarez's men trying to capture/kill Slayter. In response to the ensuing stunned silence the elderly apoearing Slayter says, "Who do you think taught Merlin how to shoot?" |

Hi PeterZ,
But if Slaytyr is distracted or busy elsewhere, because sooner or later he's going to be just too late to save the day at least once, if RFC lets the law of averages operate. Remember too that Ahlverez might just try to shoot DE instead since he thinks he's the one that dictated Kyrbysh's false reports [snippet #20], grinning evilly while he did it, when DE may still know nothing about them. Granted if there were such a scene I think Merlin could save the duke, but could he stop a bunch of other ICA officers and/or guards from shooting Ahlverez in time to save him? Again I think its obvious that Ahlverez is being saved to rescue Dohlar from the Go4 when the allies really put the screws on the kingdom. So I think its quite possible that RFC has saved this potential scene for when Dohlar formally surrenders to the allies in Gorath City, and Zhapyth Slaytyr is there as part of the allied party, because I do think they will meet again. By then Ahlverez may be in a better mood to just laugh it off, or see it as the hand of god, since it worked out for the best; since I expect he's one of the new king's regents by then. Time and luck can do that. L

It will be interesting to see what happens to Rahnald... I'm not quite ready to completely write him off.
I think Charis should stay out it and let Dohlar decide who rules Dohlar. Charis' only interest in the matter is getting Dohlar out of the war. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Hi Don,
Please read my post again, I never implied Charis would be directly involved in ending Rahnyld IV's reign. Rather it will probably be more a case of Rahnyld IV expiring from natural causes possibly including pulling a Harless, or maybe after exhausting himself at some sport etc [given his apparent age], or simply abdicating on the advice of his wise first minister Duke Fern, or perhaps not; ie ignoring his duty and panicking, then fleeing to Zion or Harchong like the kaiser to the Netherlands, than any direct action by the alliance or Charis. Who knows? Duke Fern might set the situation up to get a better king or regency to deal with the crisis. Given that we have nothing in the textev to recommend him, why do you like him so much? L

Hi Lyonheart, My comment wasn't really aimed at you, particularly. It was intended more as a general comment about the situation. As for your speculation, while I am not ready to write Rahnyld off at this point, you could turn out to be right. He has not been set up as a sympathetic character.
