No. That was the excuse. The real reason was that Langhorne and co wanted to get rid of their tech. Those ships could have easily been powered down and hidden, probably in the asteroid belt. No need to destroy them.

No. David tells us that the original plan was to hide the ships out in the asteroid belt, powered down and perhaps covered with rubble. The Federation believed that they would be undetectable unless the Gbaba got close enough to Safehold to tell there was a low-tech civilization there anyway.

Langhorne got rid of the ships to get rid of the tech base.

The only colony vessel I remember still being around before Commodore Pei struck down Langhorne and most of his supporters was the Hamilcar.

A really interesting question. I'd wager that most of them were based at the old temple and got caught in Kau-Yung's nuke. The rest, no idea. Possibly just destroyed so there wouldn't be awkward questions to ask. It would've been done under Chihiro's orders, and Chihiro essentially followed Langhorne's plan.

I will bet the Hamilcar is still around somewhere as well.

Insert Scheular key in time of need...

Ghaba show up and done!!

Schuyler realized after the nuke that they needed a backup plan and spent the next two decades rebuilding the temple after he had family...

A clever idea.

Unfortunately, the last time this was proposed, David responded that the Hamilcar was much, much bigger than the Temple, and was too big to land on a planet anyway.

It is believed, however, that the manufacturing capabilities of the Hamilcar were instrumental in constructing the Temple after Pei's pocket nuke.

Exactly that which makes me think some parts of it where recycled into the temple... Plus the temple reforming using tractor beams and that majestic dome settling into place would seem pretty "Angelic" convince a lot of Adams and Eves to join the temple in the war against the fallen.

It doesn't seem very likely that anyone saw the dome being put into place. The area was uninhabited at the time. We also don't know whether the dome was built elsewhere and moved, or built in-place. I tend to think it was built in-place. But who knows? Maybe we'll get clues in the next few books.

We know from the early chapters of OAR that at least ONE chariot survived the nuke - it was parked at Lakeview or at least somewhere AWAY from Zion.
