The definitive texts are IEH, EoH, and SoSag.
Shuttles land via countergrav and turbines fed via fusion bottle or hydrogen where their main propulsion unit is their wedge once clear of the ground. EoH, places number of seats at around 300 and gear for a RHN assault shuttle. SoSag, puts ~1000 tons of delivered palleted product down on a single flight for a cargo shuttle. What the density cubage of said 1000 tons is on the other hand is a big ol'? Lets just use the tried and true 0.25 tons/m^3. This would off hand place the internal volume at 4000 cubic meters and a total tonnage MGW 1500tons-2000tons. Or approximately the 4X the internal volume of a 747F or A380. Call it a tube approximately 7mx7m with a length of 50m or so. _________

I just realized that, not only would the wedge of a hyper-capable ship go through the ocean into the crust, it would go all the way through the crust and into the mantle. The oceanic crust is only about 5 to 10 km thick!

Isn't the wedge wide? Why would it be that far below, and above? |

Wide and tall, see this article on wedge geometry for details on just how big it is |

The volume inside the wedges is massive - if you were to strap every ship in the RMN together for storage, the entire RMN would fit in 1 SD's wedge volume. Turning any ship's wedge on would be unpleasant for the rest of the ships, however. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |

One of the ways for killing a planet (or seriously strip mining it anyway) with Honorverse tech that I have came up with is taking an SD or ship with similar sized wedge in a powered orbit ~70km up dragging the lower edge of the wedge through the planet's surface and peel the planet like an apple |

Agreed. My only point in mentioning those is that it shows that an impeller can operate in atmosphere, not that it WOULD do so deep in the troposphere, etc.. I'd imagine that the mining/scoop ships are impeller driven around the big gas giants, etc. Hard crust planet wise, the only way a ship is going to get far enough clear of the planet's surface is by turbine/lift and countergrav, which is a secondary reason that I'd expect that only relatively small ships would even be built to be trans-atmospheric. Somewhere around 10Km altitude, I'd expect that a ship (like the courier ship) could start easing in impellers so that it can get to speed earlier, nothing more than that. ---------------------
All my posts are YMMV, IMHO, and welcoming polite discussion, extension, and rebuttal. This is the HonorVerse, after all |

As was stated before the courier ship was in orbit, not on the ground. The courier needed a shuttle to transfer people and things between ground and orbit; it could not land on the ground itself. --------------------------------------------
