Why is it that I think we're getting desperate around here???

32 days and counting down...

I was happier with The Hobbit than I expected to be, but it would be very hard to argue that the middle movie shouldn't have been dispensed with. Still, I think it did need 2. If the true be told, it was probably some suit who demanded a trilogy.

The book The Silmarillion is certainly unfilmable - for the same reason that The Collected Works of William Shakespeare is unfilmable. Way too many stories. If you pulled in material from the Unfinished Tales, and had an insane degree of self-restraint [yes, there are film-makers with self-restraint. unfortunately, they tend to make documentaries, not fiction], you could put Quenta Silmarillion into 4-5 loosely-connected films: done properly, the 2 love stories and the Fall of Nargothrond are a movie each. You either shouldn't do the framing narrative at all, or use it as the connecting bits for the others and then conclude with a grand finale that ends the War. Hmmm... yes, on reflection, the Fall of Nargothrond, the Tale of Beren & Luthien, Idril, Tuor and the fall of Gondolin, and the Quest of Earendil. Akallabeth, just ignore the first 2800 years of the narrative and concentrate on the Downfall of Numenor and the War of the Last Alliance - which brings us right up to the opening scene of Fellowship.

So there you are. Even cherry-picking the most cinematic narrative sequences you've got decent stuffing for 6-8 epics. The truely fun part is that, unlike Hobbit & LOTR, this is Game of Thrones material. The typical Tolkien audience Will Not Be Amused.

I wish they'd made just one Hobbit movie and moved on to the Silmarillion...

Keep Hollywood's hands off of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress!" I can only imagine the havoc they'd raise with the lunar colony's marriage arrangements...

Here's another use for special forces.

Commonly today they're tasked with being liaison to allied militaries.

It's ugly, but guerrilla warfare can be effective, and bands of guerrillas would get a training and morale boost if seijins appear from the pages of history to assist them.

"I come and go like the wind, I'll open the doors of the fortress for you from the inside, and here's how you use the new rifles I brought you. All true sons of the Church think as one with you and keep you constantly in their prayers."
