Aren't you familiar with RFC's post on 'how the series won't end'?

Yeah I am familiar with it and IMHO I get the feeling from it that there is some big twist coming from Celery Chomper

(he planted the seed with his" fan fic" to make us think a certain way subconsciously so that we are too close to the problem to see the solution ie. Case in point the stalemate on the path to electricity thread)

Yeah, I remember Nahrmahn saying something like "I've got too much of OWL in me to be separated from him in another form."

He is spending so much time in VR I am sure that like OWL's accelerated development from VR time with him that he is rebuilding his own personality algorithm - remember he was one of the greatest at the game - wouldn't be surprised if there is an owl/Nahrmahn coup of the cave eventually
You're forgetting that OWL considers Merlin to be his military commander - probably Nimue as well. That does not apply to Nahrmahn! Besides, what would Nahrmahn possibly want to accomplish by seizing the cave? He can think of anything he desires, including company, and his VR unit will provide it. He has full access to all the history of the TF and its technology, so he can do all the studying he wants. He also maintains his role as the Imperial spymaster, so he's getting to play the "Great Game" on a global scale.

So not only is is it not possible for Nahrmahn to betray his friends and take control of OWL, he has absolutely no motivation to do it. Remember, his VR can be physically disconnected from OWL, at which point he'd cease to exist. Plus he likes Cayleb and Sharley, his daughter is marrying into the Imperial family, and his son is the 2nd ranking noble in the EoC. So why would Nahrmahn, who thinks in dynastic terms, risk his son's inheritance and place in the power structure of the EoC? Plus Ohlyvya would kick him in a very painful place the next time she put on her VR suit! Multiple times!

So of all the theories of what may happen during the series, this is one of the least likely to occur. Of course RFC loves to throw us a twist now and then, but a betrayal of this magnitude (which isn't even possible) after how well we've gotten to know Nahrmahn, both as a man and a VP, is simply unimaginable. He'd have nothing to gain, and too much to lose. Happy men don't betray their friends, and in his current "life" as a VP, Nahrmahn is about as happy as he's ever been. (Once Ohlyvya got her VR suit that is!) ;)

"Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear.

RFC does come up with unexpected twists and turns in his stories. But I've been reading him for over 20 years and I've never seen him betray his story line. He really doesn't do bizzare.

If anything, the Digital Duo (Nahrmahn and OWL) would go to get lengths to protect the Cave.

I have only had the pleasure of reading the master wizard's work for the last 3 years and only so far as the Safeholdians go. I look forward to the future and more of his series.

You're in for a serious treat with the "Honor Harrington" series and Dahak, "The Excalibur Alternative," "Path of the Fury," Starfire, ("In Death Ground" and "The Shiva Option" are among RFC's best work but they never seem to get mentioned.) and of course Bahzell in the "War God" series, and the Multiverse, which has only two books so far (they're really good) but the 3rd is on the publishing schedule. Toss in a couple of the Bolo books that RFC contributed to, plus all his books that I failed to mention, and you'll be reading for a long, long time.

How I envy you still having the opportunity to read them all for the first time...

If I may interject. I recommend "In Fury Born" rather than "Path of the Fury". The prequel sets up the story nicely and the poignancy of both parts of the story are maintained. Reading the original story before the prequel detracts from the prequel IMHO.

So, first time poster here, and I have no idea if this has been posited before, but I've just today had an idea.

So, the Key of Schueler. We know that it has something to do with the control system under the Temple, you need it, the Stone, and "true faith" to activate it.

Now, there's the question of what exactly would be activated under the temple. But in LAMA, we get the prologue, where Nahrmahn and Owl examine the Key. The critical thing they mention is a twelve petabyte file.

I think that twelve petabyte file is an AI, stored in the Key, possibly even a copy of Schueler's personality stored in the Key. That's the so-called Voice of God that will address whoever activates the panel under the Temple without that same Voice having interfered on Safehold.

Thoughts?

Yep, that is more or less the most popular theory about the key. There are a few variations, such as whether it is Schueler or someone else, but you've outlined the big one.

Shan-wei and company wanted to preserve a base of knowledge. The best way to do that is to make lots of copies. They were smart enough to know that.

Where did they put them, in what form, and how long were they to be hidden from Safeholders? Has that time come up yet?
