Traditionally, Archangels only had 1 name, Gabriel, Lucifer, etc, as they were created by God and therefore required no family name.

They probably don't know - To Safeholdians, the "archangels" are larger than life, semi-divine beings who are beyond mortal strictures of family. But Schueler's first name (Frederick) is mentioned in LAMA by Nahrmahn as he confirms Paityr Wynsyn's lineage. Last edited by thanatos on Sun Sep 06, 2015 2:34 pm, edited 1 time in total.

I believe the current Grand Vicar and the former Archbishop of Charis both had the same first name as Langhorn (accounting for spelling variations), so I think at least some knowledge of the Archangels full names survived.

"Knowledge" may be too strong a word. It's somewhat unlikely that 'Eric' and variations on it saw that much use in Temple families as a coincidence, but it could go back to a tradition that was established early on without people retaining the knowledge that it goes back to Langhorne's first name. |

Then too, with 8 million Adams and Eves, names like Eric and Frederick could have existed in the population as common names quite apart from and in ignorance of any knowledge of the names of the archamgels themselves. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Heh... I asked David the question of Safeholdians knowing the Angels' & Archangels' first names a while back. I'll have to dig out that email. I doubt he'd mind, if I shared. My question was phrased about the circumstances around Cayleb deciding to believe Merlin after the Armageddon Reef Campaign, when Merlin said:
I asked him if Merlin's use of Jwo-jeng's full name was a factor in Cayleb's fairly quick decision. I thought it would have been an interesting angle to approach things. IIRC, Safeholdian's do know that the Archangels had first and last names, but they aren't referenced much. |

The first name of Grand Vicar Eric XVII is a sure sign that the names of Archangels are known and widely venerated. Until recent times, the same went for names of the Apostles and this continues in Catholic culture even now. Not to mention names like Michael and Gabriel being popular in both sexes and Raphael lagging not far behind. |

I stand corrected... my recollection was wrong. Emphasis mine.
This from an email exchange David & I had early last year. |

Oh Ah. Thats v interesting. I had been wondering what had happened to the crew. Did His Celeryness happen to mention what happened to the remaining command crew/archangels as they got older? |
