If you ever write a story about action woman's amazing adventures in space, let me know. I'd sure love to read it.
I'll admit that Sandaria is the one person who makes me really nervous, so I hope any high tech in the cave requires commander level access to use! (I presume OWL would enforce that sort of thing.)

If not, that could be Sandaria flying the skimmer, and I'm not wild about her motives...

I still think the artist is just being dramatic, and as usual when the skimmer is flying over a battle, the scene portrayed on the cover never actually occurs.

"Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear.

Spoilersport.....

I would think that flying a skimmer would require a certain amount of technical knowledge and training, which Sandria is so far lacking, and so it would have to be Owl flying it remotely.

Huh, you're right, unless Sandaria was like 'hey, TF tech is some awesome magic, eh?', and Owl is all 'nope, not magic, here, lemme show ya how it works...' I mean, c'mon, she's Nynian's agent, she'd sure be able to trick Owl into teaching her how to properly skimmer. If she really is in mind for some unauthorized adventures, then I dear hope Nahrmarhn is keeping a close eye on her.

Then again, I must admit that I'm kinda worried about not as much the skimmir as the reactions of those two-hundred-odd people who must be on the same ship Nimue and Merlin are. Either something bad's about to happen to them or a huge group of people is about to be introduced to the Inner Circle really quickly.

Then again, the latter option may not be all that bad... 8-)

It's all happening in the holodeck

Given that pbreed is still arguing that the LAMA cover is accurate although what is depicted never occurs in the book (sure Merlin and Nimue welsh-name were together in the cave, did we ever see them observe a Rottweiler?) I think the most likely solution is that this cover is similarly accurate ;)

Honestly, these covers, while inaccurate, are far from the worst offenders. I remember Jack Campbell got so annoyed with his book covers that he actually mocked them in his own book.

Occurred in the book or was described in the book.

LAMA scene Occurred in the book but was not explicitly described.

HFQ Scene Occurs in the book AND is described in the book.

Isn't this an oxymoron? If the scene isn't explicitly described, how can you know for sure it happened? We don't even get a "Merlin showed Nimue a holo-image of a Safeholdian ship." kind of line that references the event in past tense.

I can see Merlin giving Nimue a briefing of the state of the world she has just woken up in. If a picture of the current "New" ship technology was not part of that briefing then it was inadequate.... Do you really want the author to carefully detail 40 hours of briefing from merlin to Nimue? We all know it occured....

RFC has created a whole world for us to play in. Lots of things happen in that world that we might imagine but aren't explicitly described...

If the cover showed a seamstress working on a white parka would that be on the book or not? I'd argue it would be because the book talks about Charis making make specialized clothing for winter war fighting.... in any case the HFQ cover will meet both your and my definition of in the book.

I also thought that the cover of LAMA was quite accurate, even if that exact scene didn't explicitly appear. Accurate because it could have (and arguably *did*, off-camera during Nimue's 'run up'), but also because the scene itself accurately portrayed fairly well what they'd look like.

It's way, WAY better than most of the classic HH covers, and light years better than the original War God covers (love the new one, though.)

If this cover is accurate (and it sounds like pbreed read an ARC, so if he says it is then it is), then the stance / expression of Merlin looks key. He's totally unconcerned about the skimmer strafing what looks like an allied ship just a few hundred yards away. 'What-if' briefing?

Fun thread. The cover is obscure enough that confirming the scenes existence doesn't spoil much, and it's hard to figure out just what's going on. :D

I'm pretty sure that Nimue and Merlin just had a conversation that went like, "how'd she learn to fly a skimmer and operate a com?"
"So, kinda awkward, but I have a confession to make...."
