Hi Don,

OK, how's this?

Suppose Nimue whips herself up into something incredibly drop dead gorgeous or whatever most appeals to a certain Grand Inquisitor, and struts thru Zion before visiting the temple as a pilgrim, after being suitably coached by Nynian; rumors fly and Clyntahn [told late] only glimpses her as she leaves then orders that she be brought back to the temple, but she humbly refuses, but is willing to later meet all the many episcopate/vicarate well-wishers again at a discrete mansion very near the temple, suitably chaperoned of course.

Will that be enough to draw Clyntahn out of the temple even very heavily guarded, at night?

Merlin has sworn if he ever did, he'd be a dead man.

Does the inner circle want to kill him so soon?

The possibilities from then on are intriguing if not delightful.

What I think would be fun would be a field op that would be coordinated between Nimue and Nynian's people...something covert with a bit of razzle dazzle that would leave Clyntahn breaking up furniture!

lyonheart,

You should be an author! You always have such a range of thought provoking ideas!

I like this last one, though.

Hi Don,

Since the regency council don't know all that Merlin does, they can hardly put Nimue in the same niche.

I can see Koryn using every excuse he can think of to spend time with Nimue, but we have yet to see the regency council have any problem interpreting any data from the unseen seijins, though he might prod his father when Nimue thinks its necessary.

But how someone so recently arrived explains how she knows so much about the intricacies of Corisande and its aristocracy might be a bit awkward or perhaps amusing, even for a seijin, since she didn't have the human required time for those unseen seijins to brief her.

Then again, it's going to be almost seven years before Daivyn becomes of age and prince in his own right, a bit long to wait to be Daivyn's special adviser, even if the inner circle were thinking that far ahead..

Pardon me, but you're making the same false assumption PeterZ did.

That is, most of the Regency Council doesn't know how much advice Merlin gives, or that he gives any at all, which isn't surprising since the rest haven't met him in the first place, unless it was while signing the surrender treaty.

Anvil Rock and Tartarian have recognised his critical role, but there's no indication they've shared that insight with the whole council, nor any indication they need or intend to.

Thus your problem is we have no textev that the Regency and Council Royal etc are paying any attention at all to Seijin Nimue [who probably stands outside the council room, not inside]; nor do we have any textev that Nimue is providing or even interested in providing said insights, so your concern is rather moot.

Nimue may be in the process of quietly changing that, as she has changed the impression women are helpless, but its going to take much longer with all those who didn't witness her demolishing of Lt. Sheltyn, or visit him in the hospital.

Again, since Nimue is there in Manchyr during the day, because she doesn't need any sleep, she is quite able to share any of her 'insights' into the belated information the regency council receives and acts upon that doesn't go where inner circle [including Irys and Hektor] thinks it should to help shift it in the right direction, probably by going through General Gahrvai.

Remember Corisande is rather far from the critical action, and until the Go4 cobble a fleet together that can threaten the EoC closer to home [odds nil], they will remain a backwater news-wise, for which I hope they feel ample gratitude for their fortunate state.

So it isn't critical for Nimue to attend the council meetings inside yet, and probably not for some time to come.

Hi Lyonheart,

Eh??? I certainly didn't mean that Nimue should become a policy advisor to the regency council, although Merlin and Cayleb certainly talk things through...

I would imagine that she could come to serve a similar role for Daivyn once he assumes the full responsibility as Prince of Corisande.

But what I was really talking about for the here and now was assisting Gahrvai, Anvil Rock and Tartian in interpreting snarc data that might come up that could reveal security threats. It's not hard to visualize her involved in such discussions and offer ideas about how to respond. It could all be very informal and also very helpful.

The point is that although Corisande has moved in a very positive direction, the conquest is still recent enough that it is probably too soon to report that the sour taste left by that is gone. The very wise policies adopted by the imperial crown are helping, as are very successful visits by Sharleyan and Archbishop Mikael. But Corisande will only be completely out of the woods once she sees and accepts that her participation in the Empire is as a full partner, not just a conquered province. At the moment, however, the potential for unrest remains.

Now about Nimue... As you undoubtedly recall, her PICA was created in the aftermath of that rakurai strike on Irys and Hektor on their wedding day. The immediate object of her mission was to keep Daivyn and Irys alive. Doing that involves integrating her into palace security AND establishing those relationships upon which she will need to rely to assist in carrying out her mission.

To conclude, I suspect that Manchyr will continue to be Nimue's "home base." That certainly does not preclude her participation in some covert ops or the sort of errand running we saw with her visit to Sympkyn in that last snippet.

Lovely, fun idea. However, she won't go anywhere near the temple for the same reason Merlin won't

Hi Lyonheart,

There needs to be a distinction here between the regency council as a whole and what we will call the "executive board." This latter is a bit more informal and tends to get called up when there is something immediate that needs to be dealt with. Its members are Anvil Rock who is regent, Tartian who is also on the council, Gahrvai who is security resposible for those 30,000 keeping order, and Doyal who wears the intel hat in Corisande these days.

All of these people are accustomed to "the seijins intel network" and none of them will have any difficulty at all with Nimue. Being introduced as a seijin will establish her creds and relationships will grow and deepen from there.

True enough, but this idea is just too good to let it disappear. Why Nimue, though? Why not one of Nynian's lovely ladies? If there's none gorgeous enough, I'm fairly confident OWL's production module could whip out something like those latex masks of Mission: Impossible to make any human agent perfectly tailored to Clyntahn's personal preferences.

Then, while in the mansion, after Clyntahn disappears into the bedroom with the lay, have her get him somewhere close to the window. If she can't assassinate him herself, Merlin could take him down by a sniper rifle - I'm pretty sure TF-era guns would have enough range to be effective from beyond Temple sensors' range. Have the lady find what remains from TF bullet (if there's any left), leave suitably fabricated pistol bullet in its place and sneak out by the window or something.

As for the aftermath... oh, the schadenfreude!

Do TF era assault rifles fire projectiles? We know they use ammunition (2,000,000 rounds :D) but nothing about how they work.

Besides I'm sure it says somewhere that Clyntahn always invites his ladies into the Temple complex and takes his pleasures there, out of an abundance of prudence (NTM paranoia).

Probably. They may not be using chemical reactions (they may be railguns or some similar/equivalent technology), but if you have a power source sufficiently compact to make DEW small arms viable, you can probably get as many or more shots from a mass driver, and a projectile can be a lot more versatile/flexible than DEW, unless you're rolling with the sort of magic supertech that makes Star Trek phasers viable.

Clyntahn is known to have a habit of mounting his mistresses while looking out his corner window over the city of Zion.

The assassination plan is shaping up nicely

I guess Clyntahn's guards would thoroughly search the lady before letting her anywhere near the Grand Inquisitor, especially given the recent assassinations. Of course, Merlin could take him down from the window... if it wasn't for this translucent coating thing that's suppossedly strong enough to protect the Temple from anyting short of multi-megaton warhead.

Solution pending...

There is no practical way to put a shot through one of the Temple's windows. What may be slightly more achievable would be hitting it hard enough to cause spalling damage, depending on how the Temple and the windows are actually constructed/layered. This, however, is 'more achievable' relative to actually putting a shot through a window. It's still going to take a fairly high power weapon - and frankly, I suspect that if you've got a weapon that can either punch through, or even just reliably cause spalling, against the Temple's windows, you would probably have been better off spending the time and effort on making a weapon system to attack the OBS.
