I'd quibble with your parenthetical. The OFS likes creating dependencies and protectorates. Certain of the Transtellars like to exploit such systems. The Mandarins like the fees produced by then; those fund their government. But the bulk of the League, the sovereign systems and their populations are probably fairly indifferent on the matter.

As big as the corrupt and greedy Transtellars that plunder the Shell are to those peripheral systems they aren't big or powerful enough at home to bend the will of Core systems. Those systems get little from the exploited verge, but it also doesn't cost them to have those systems exploited, so they are apathetic.

That's probably true, but the concerns and/or indifference of any singular League member has no effect on the policies and preferences of the League Government -- aka "the Mandarins." I doubt that the SLN pays much attention to individual league members either.

Isn't there textev that the current elected League President is a puppet figurehead for the controlling family of a prominent Transtellar? In addition to that explicit example, there is a strong implication that the Mandarins give more credence to the complaints and concerns of Transtellars than it does league members.

After all, the League Government gets a large percentage of its income from "interstellar commerce" regulations and fees -- i.e. from the transstellar corporations.

D'Orville had King Roger and Kuzak had King Roger III. Who had King Roger II? Also, even though they were destroyed, wouldn't both Sebastian's and Kuzak's ships continue to be honoured? They both died heroically.

There should also be a RMS Salamander, much to Honor's chagrin. Even with her metabolism, she can't have her cake and eat it too.

The League should be running out of ship names. And I think textev supported that, because didn't they have a ship named for something or someone that Honor, or someone, couldn't believe would be a ship name? Can anyone recall that ship's name?

Does textev give account of a ship being removed from the list?

What's the age distribution of the Reserve Fleet? What is the oldest SD hull in the Reserve Fleet? Which SD has been in the Reserve Fleet the longest? Do they ever scrap hulls (other than for battle or operational damage), or just let them gather dust, unpowered, unaired, uncrewed, orbiting some distant planet?, What is the technology span of the Reserve Fleet? RFC has said that some of the Reserve Fleet still have auto cannon rather than PDLCs. Will the SLN expend the resources to activate the newest tranche of SDs from the reserves?

You should read the Pearls, and specifically http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/si ... gton/202/1.

We don't know how old the oldest hulls in the Reserve are, but that doesn't matter that much. Prior to the Havenite war, naval technology had been pretty stagnant for centuries. The Solarian League Navy runs the Reserve through a 100-year cycle. Essentially, every year, 1% of the Reserve is refurbished to current standards. Presumably, if a ship hull undergoing refurbishing was determined to be unsuitable or too damaged to use, it would be scrapped. And new-build ships are added to the Reserve regularly, as well. At any given time, no ship was effectively older than 100 years, even if the physical hulls were older. Given the rate of change in naval technology, this was quite adequate to keep the Reserve up-to-date for probably a thousand years or more.

Over the last century, there has been a lot of changes in naval technology--some of the pre-dating the Havenite war. As you noted, some Reserve ships still have autocannons instead of PDLCs, because those were invented less than 100 years ago. And most of the ships are still graser-heavy, because they were designed before laserheads. That's not even counting the changes introduced by Manticore.

Of course, all of these specifics don't really matter, because the Reserve will not be used. The text tells us that the SLN has already decided not to try activating the Reserve. They fully realize that none of the ships in the Reserve are of any use against Manticore.

Once again adding to SWM - while we don't know the age or distribution of the Reserve, at one time it held DNs, but they were all sold off or destroyed, so it contains only SDs and escorts. The ratio of Escorts is insufficient for the # of SDs, as FF is "planned" to provide the bulk of such units for the reserve fleet. The Scientist Class SD (the design which appears to be the bulk of the SLN wall and seen in both attack fleets) is known to be a design >250 years old (though updated many times and still in production). 2/3rd of the reserve fleet still has autocannon in their missile defense. Whether this means that they have zero PDLCs or a mixture of the 2, we do not know.

Bunch of questions, cthia; I'll take a crack at them.

cthia wrote:D'Orville had King Roger and Kuzak had King Roger III. Who had King Roger II? Also, even though they were destroyed, wouldn't both Sebastian's and Kuzak's ships continue to be honoured? They both died heroically.

Roger II was King from 1642-1669. Edward Saganaimi's career overlapped most of that time, as seen from HoS:

Admitted to the Navy, he excelled on the basis of sheer talent, determination, and energy and had risen to commodore’s rank by 1662 despite a complete lack of patronage or highly placed relatives. At that time, he was selected to command the successful punitive expedition against the Ranier System, whose piratical “navy” had been raiding commerce and infrastructure in the vicinity of the Hennesy Terminus of the Manticoran Wormhole Junction.

Albeit the event that Saganaimi is remembered for (and lead to his death)came in PD 1672 under Queen Adrienne.

There should also be a RMS Salamander, much to Honor's chagrin. Even with her metabolism, she can't have her cake and eat it too.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there is one, just off-screen.

You might be thinking of the Joseph Buckley, which Mike Henke remarked about being the 5th or 6th ship of that name, most of which came to bad endings (and since this one was Crandall's flagship, it also didn't survive.

As for running out of names, I think that is unlikely. The MWW has tried to keep the names from 'Old Earth" as much as possible for our (and perhpas his) benefit, but he's barely scrathced the surface of 2,000 additional years of history, not to mention the histories and features of 1,800 member planets. Heck, just add French, Spanish, and Chinese ship names to the mix and your names would increase several fold.

Does textev give account of a ship being removed from the list?

None that I have ever seen.

The Joseph Buckley. Yep, that's the one Hutch. Thanks.

Little wonder it's such a fragile ship too. Even with the smallest of hits, the reinforced structural members shall buckle. I guess they always perform to design specifications. lol

There has already been a ship named HMS Salamander she was the lead ship of the Salamander class destroyers. It is also the name of Manticore A-I.

We could also assume that one of the Thorston(Torston?) class BBs (named for Manticorian Planetary bodies) was named Salamander also.

That is only to be expected: that the Best will be Best.

One consideration is that some vessels bearing a listed name may later perform deeds worthy of inclusion on the List in their own right - for instance, the second Fearless at Second Yeltsin or multiple Nikes.

Thanks for the info saber. I wasn't aware of either fact.

My next puzzlement is why RFC passed up weaving it directly into storyline in dramatic fashion?

I can imagine Honor -- the Salamander -- having at her disposal, only several lowly destroyers - outnumbered, of the Salamander class to assist her. Where she squeezes blood out of baby Salamanders.
