What ship name do you think belongs on the list?
any ship name real of fictional allowed. I'm thiking we need more of the classics so I'd like to see a Dauntless , I mean it did serve as Kim Kinison's flagship |

And tugboats should be honored as well. What was the tug that saved so many lives at Oyster Bay? -- that's my first ballot. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

You must be referring to HMS Quay. But my vote goes to HMS Hawkwing at Selker rift, taking on a Battle Cruiser with a Destroyer. That's like the RW HMS Glowworm vs KMSf Hipper and HMS Jervis Bay vs Adm. Schemer. |

Some of the known ships on the List of Honour. I'm sure there are many more not called out in textev - it would strike me as very odd if 11 of 16 names in the entire history of the RMN only got added very recently, after the Battle of Monica. One consideration is that some vessels bearing a listed name may later perform deeds worthy of inclusion on the List in their own right - for instance, the second Fearless at Second Yeltsin or multiple Nikes. Another consideration is that a pool of several hundred names are constantly recycled, with the List names getting priority. I'm wondering how the SLN names their Reserve vessels. There are 8,000 of them and all the good names have been taken by at least 4,000 active units in Battle and Frontier Fleets. No wonder they keep naming them after Joe Buckley, despite the atrocious luck that goes with it! |

I suspect that most of the reserve fleet(s) are composed of ships that have "aged out" of the active fleets (e.g., those with auto cannon rather than PDLCs). They would carry their names into the Reserves. Unless the SLN has something like the "List of Honour." Then they might get renamed to allow a new, active force hull to carry the name and tradition forward, as the Reliant class Nike and Star Knight or Saganami A/B Quentin St. James did. How they might name ships that go directly into the Reserve Fleet (gotta keep those shipyards humming, you know. And the graft flowing)? Somehow, Reserve Super Dreadnaught 1500 just doesn't roll off the tongue the way that, say, GNS Honor Harrington does, as a memorial and an inspiration. |

If I remember correctly a portion of the new builds go directly into the Reserve after their acceptance into the SLN. The portion displaced in the active fleet is also updated and placed into the reserve. So the reserve is a hodgepodge of old and new, updated and not (over half still have autocannon on them. Some, still with the new aircar smell, others as moldy and mildewy as they come ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |

At this point the Reserve naming scheme can be simplified into: Target 1, target 2, target 3, etc.
ETA: Regarding the list, Henke's flaghsip while she was with 8th fleet was the Ajax? It seems like a good candidate. |

a warship named after a warrior is never a bad choice.
I was half expecting to see things like "Lucky Leprachun" or maybe "Caron's Rift" |

It's possible that every SD (at least) the SLN has ever owned sits orbiting some dead planet as part of the "Reserve Fleet." Except, of course, for those destroyed at Spindle or 2nd Manticore (recognizing those who insist that the battle against the Brotherhood should really be considered 1st Manticore, Axelrod/Volsung as 2nd, the Haven invasion as 3rd and Filaretta 4th). Not to change the topic, but is there any textev that the Brotherhood actually made it into Manticore local space before they were defeated? Might they have been engaged in some system far, far, away (at least from Manticore)? |
