We know the inquisitor is handing out all sorts of dispensations so to gain or at least match charis technical advantage. What if amongst those posters that Merlin gets placed every where, those dispensations and technologies are published? It is believed that once the war is over, the church will deal with those dispensations, technology and htose involved. So if all the details are already published, it would near impossible to remove it all as they planed.
also, it would allow charis to take advantage of any openiings in the restrictions the church creates. |

Yeah, and then some bright guy invents electricity and will get "rakuraied". And once the war is over there will be no more inquisition.

That's a pretty nice idea, although perhaps not for the same reason you gave. As Captain Igloo already noted, the end goal for Merlin is making it impossible for the Church to stop the progress, so for this, those posters are unnecessary. However, there are several more reasons to do them.
First, this would show the common men that Church and Charis are not so different. After all, Church is claiming that it avoids "heretical innovations", but if you show the people that at its core, heretic and TL tech is the same, they'll start to wonder. Second, connected to the above, it would show commoners that Clyntahn is not playing fair in this game, as rather than search for "archangel-approved" method, he throws dispensations left and right, which would further undermine any shreds of respect Go4 has left. And third, probably most important, it would educate people about new technologies. I'm fairly sure that for many of them, newly-introduced things are black magic, so this would lessen any uneasiness people would feel in regards to the tech, introduce it to them for possible future civillian uses and - perhaps - inspire some of them, because that's what Merlin wants, isn't it? -----------

I'm sure that as you say Merlin is in favor of tech spreading. In fact there is more than ample evidence of that in the texts. However, it is also true that he is heavily committed to Charis' survival and in getting rid of the G-4 and the inquisition. So perhas he wouldn't mind seeing most innovation in TL controlled lands wait until those other goals are achieved. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

They dont share anything the empire has, just what the church and allies have.
Just because the knowledge is out there, does mot mean the other nations can use it to full potential. The only reason the church has progressed is that it forced cooperation to occur. While it might later cause trouble for the empire, merlin greater concern is the develoment of tech, it is worth the minor difficulties that may occur. Ity would force other nations to dveelop modern technical infrastructure. |

So he's got two major goals: increase innovation and help Charis win. (Yes, both of those are oversimplified. Unpack and expand as needed.) You're noting that Kakai's benefit #3 goes against the help Charis win goal where the spread of technology applies in Temple-controlled lands. On the other hand though, benefits #1 and #2 advance both goals. So it's got 5 points for it and 1 point against it. They aren't necessarily equally weighted, but in order to make it a bad idea in sum you would have to suppose that Charisian technological advantage is much more important than even hammering home that Charis is doing nothing demonic and Clyntahn is a fanatic hypocrite to Charisian victory, much less prying the mind of Safehold out of the Proscriptions' grasp. That's a high bar. |
