Don't know if this has been discussed before...

Mesa practices "genetic slavery" - human beings bred, born and raised as slaves, sometimes heavily modified for specific roles or environments, sometimes as administrative specialists (the accountants, for example), entertainers (clowns, fools, jugglers and gymnasts), and of course, "pleasure units," both male and female.

Do pirates or planet raiders take captives and sell them into bondage? Does Mesa so dominate the market for forced labor (of various types) that traditional chattel slavery is not economic?

They have in the past, it was mentioned in one of the stories or books. IIRC, there was something about some organization that clearly wasn't Manpower (just ask Manpower, they will tell you it wasn't them) would raid isolated planets to grab people for various purposes. I think this included increasing the genetic diversity of their slave lines as well as just enslaving them. This apparently doesn't happen much (if at all) these days. Though pirates still might.

Pirates might do so, from captured crews to operate the ships but probably ransom them at a later date. IIRC Thandi's homeworld had a problem with slave catching. IIRC several of the slaves aboard the Felicia III had Nendble(sp) genetic traits.

There is some discussion in, IIRC "Crown of Slaves" about Manpower &c using people from the M'Fecane (sp?) worlds as source stock for some of the heavier duty slave lines. The Great Kaja was not amused by that history.

I think it was a system near the Andies called "New Hamburg"--they were still holding slaves locally, but the Andies made them stop raiding THEM. Or Else. Forget where I read it though, either Ms. Midshipwoman, or HAE, maybe?

My :read" (general impression) has been that a couple of Manticoran centuries ago Manpower, etc. were also in the piracy game just for that reason, but the ability to "tube an embryo" and bring it to term has made that practice obsolete. It's almost like the MAlign is maintaining sufficient "breeding stock" (adults in a given line whose ovaries/testes they can raid for gametes) enough that they're almost but not quite in the "big time cloning" game.

I think that's actually the Asgard Wormhole, which is owned by the Asgard Association. We don't know much about them.

I think it was gregor? part of a binary system?

there was some comment about how the andies annexed it but had to let the treaty giving control of the terminus to manticore stand

The previous government of Gregor had ceded the Gregor Terminus of the MWJ to Manticore and also granted them basing rights around one of the bodies of the same star the terminus orbited(I forgot if it was A or B). When Gregor was absorbed by the Empire, they let the pre-existing arrangements with the SKM continue.

One of the Asgard Junction's termini is in the Durandel system, Andermani territory. There's been little or nothing in textev about who controls the Durandel terminus.
