Yes, I know... Technically the USS Gerald R. Ford is really PCU Gerald R. Ford until its official Commissioning Ceremony (planned for March 2016). That said, there's little available day-to-day progress reports available to the general public, or at least not on the Web that I can find. (Yea, I saw SOME video of the sled launches from the initial canapult tests.) Can anyone tell us more about what's happening? ERR . =====

Any more slippage due to funding? Last I heard is that the ship is in the water and that fitting out continues. Other than that I do not know. HB of CJ (old coot)

No ADDITIONAL funding issues that I've heard of, just the earlier already revealed ones. Still fitting out, or NOT (some crew berthing areas plus another item or three), as per same funding issues. New teck always takes time and money. I wonder if the real reason might be that the EMP signature could still be detected too far away when they launch the aircraft? Pretty lame excuse that the Super Hornet can not take the strain. IMHO only. Just me. HB

No, the reason is that the catapults have an unacceptable failure rate. See: http://www.navytimes.com/story/military ... /70508062/ http://www.dodbuzz.com/2014/01/31/navy- ... ty-issues/ This is the same borderline criminal idiocy that was responsible for building a carrier specifically for the F35 that requires a reworked flight deck before those planes can actually land on it without destroying it in the process. Or that declared the F35 operational before all its systems were actually installed and operating. |

Shouldn't be any problems at all, the EMALS is just a very powerful linear motor and with the energies involved the EMP will be negligible just a short distance from the EMALS rail but I wouldn't recommend anyone with a pacemaker to stand near it when it's used. There are much more powerful motors used in different industry complexes, although they are usually AC motors which are D-Y coupled to reduce the electrical start load. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

It's still better than having a carrier ready before the fixed wing component of it's air group is! At least the Ford isn't completely dependent on the F-35, unlike the HMS Queen Elizabeth. Mike. ---------------------

Why'd they name it after Ford anyway. Nothing against him but he isn't the first president I think of when it comes to naming Aircraft carriers.
