Don /quote How do you know that he's not changeing the picture according to the next port on the list /quote I would discount that possibility based on there being no photography on Safehold as yet so that any portrait on his desk was done by an artist, possibly himself, in pen and ink, charcoal, or one type of paint or another. --
A common mistake people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. |

I presume a locked closet full of portraits to be changed out depending on the port he visits. After all, at home he has a quite a reputation with the ladies. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

p. 199 AMF - "Despite the vast gulf between their titles, Jahras, evne though a mere baron, was very nearly as wealthy as Kholman. He was also married to Kholman's first cousin, a combination which, thankfully, made it possible for him to speak frankly..."
So Jahras and Kholman are cousins-in-law. Or... maybe not. p. 362 HFAF "Sir Urwyn Hahltar, Baron of Jahras and Admiral General of the Imperial Desnairian Navy, spoke quietly but with great feeling as he looked at the semaphore message in his hand. "They're coming?" Daivyn Bairaht, the Duke of Kholman, didn't sound any happier than his brother-in-law." Heh. Which is it? |

Nimue Alban's soul is the nit I'm picking. In BSRA Maikel tells Merlin to never doubt he has her soul. Now we have another PICA with a recording of her. Does the new Nimue have a soul? Was the original soul split between them ala Piers Anthony? It will be interesting to see if RFC deals with this in a future book.

Before you can really nit on this one, you really need to decide just what a soul is. There is no agreement at all on that, even amongst theologians. My own definition is that a soul is the essence of personhood. Since Nimue A., Nimue C., and Merlin A. are by this time three distinct individuals with three separate sets of experience, you have three souls, however irregular the path in which two of those souls came into existence. This is not a nit. It is a philosophical question. The book isn't trying to give definitive answers to deep philosophical questions--just food for philosophical thought. --------------------------------------------

My own personal philosophy (or headcanon): Here I have the Holy Bible (or Holy Writ, or Koran, or whatever). It's a cheap mass produced copy small enough to fit in a pocket. And over here I also have the Holy Bible (or whatever), except it's a big, hard cover with large print and fancy colors and illustrations, and has a huge price sticker to match. But otherwise, it has the same wording and information content. Are they the same Bible (or whatever)? The real answer of course is, yes and no. It's yes that they have the same stories, the same lessons, the same information content. But it's also no because the two have different packaging. By the same token, Merlin and Nimue 3.0 are both the same as Nimue 1.0 and not the same. The PACKAGING is different between all of them of course, but the information, ie the soul, is the same for all of them. And being "just a copy" makes no instance of Nimue any less valid than any copy of the Bible (or whatever) makes it any less valid than the original. |
