Of course, she's on Torch and he's out in Talbott, but I can see here coming out there to consult/reseach the MAlignment and meeting him (as her official escort?)

Longshot, I know.

ruth hooked up with a Beowulfan (I think, he's a former Manpower slave type)

If Scotty were Rafe, I'd say he'd have a Grayson beauty waiting for him, recall the conversation Honor had with her mother

Or from the same general time frame, I think he might actually have the hots for Mercedes Brigham. When she was pulled out of Blackbird, freshly raped by the Masadans, Scotty had "paled, he knew her very well indeed" which was very leading. They were assigned to different ships, so 119 didn't apply, and they'd already known each other from CL-Fearless.

And since Mercedes is never anything but a flag officer (usually Honor's) staff officer, she's never in the direct chain of command even if Scotty was commanding a division assigned with the same fleet.

...oh.

Oh my.

Oh my goodness.

Oh my goodness gracious.

Aside from the truly staggering age difference - which, you'll note, has not dissuaded me in the least from Michael/Abigail and Shannon/Sonja - I see no reason not to champion this development just as hard as I possibly can.

(Though I'll admit, the possibilities of Andrea Jaruwalski/Mercedes Brigham continue to intrigue me.)

*takes a quick bow*

and the age differential isn't all that much different than Hamish and Honor, almost exactly the same differential just the other way for ages.

Edit: a quick followup, Scotty also had a brief thing going on with Jackie Harmon during the HMAMC Wayfarer days, before she died during Second Hancock.

So it appears our young Scotty, has a thing for first-gen and second-gen prolong treatment ladies. So, going down the list of notable ladies, with older prolong treatments, would also include a certain Admiral Hemphill as another "Harkness and Babcock" sort of marriage, that stuns everybody who knows both parties.

That said, I'm gonna run before rose gets a pulse rifle out, and takes aim in my direction. *flees*

That needn't mean that. Given Mercedes' career and poise aboard CL Fearless and Scotty's background then, she would plausibly have been like... a much older sister, somewhat older cousin, young aunt - a mentor, someone well ahead in his chosen career but entirely accessible (no! not like that!!). She was family, the way your closest work partners can be, but in this case, being her, with the element of being the thoroughly competent but entirely content-as-she-is person she is. She could have been his touchstone, the person to look up to while being still a kind of elder peer - unlike, say, Captain Honor Harrington, who was then (easily) almost more of an idol than someone approachable. (Or, if you will, think of her as the officer counterpart of Horace Harkness in Ensign Tremaine's world.)

And then the Masadans got her and Scotty saw her broken. It was a scene that wrapped up violation of foundational expectations and right and wrong in one horrific and utterly personal package. Paling is entirely appropriate without having to suppose he felt that way about her.

Then at least. Now? Could be! I just think it would be a change, or a development of different feelings, not something that goes back that far this way. Scotty's certainly had time to put on a lot of maturity in her eyes if she's willing and able to adjust perspective. And for his part, the years have meant that their ages are only growing closer proportionately and they've both got a couple centuries about ahead of them if they get to have full-for-prolong lifespans.

wait, wait, I thought he had a relationship with Carolyn Walcott while they were on wayfarer (Book 6)? There was that passage where honour and rafe are discussing Warner caslett's crew and she says something along the lines "scotty and carolyn found something interesting while looking though some info in their off hours" rafe looks at her with raised eyebrows and she just shrugs and says "they aren't in the same department"

ok sure there was that mention in Ashes of victory about him being unhappy about Jackie harmon’s death at second hancock as they had worked together on wayfarer but I caught no hint of romance, and he was flight ops officer probably not same department but probably closer then regs would allow.

Also Scotty and Carolyn were in very different departments and i believe same rank.

rank difference probably isn't a huge issue if you are on different ships but I can see it being sticky if serving on the same ship

Berry did. Ruth did not.

I'd forgotten that, but sure enough the scene you mentioned is right there in chapter 28.

But from that discussion between Rafe and Honor it's unclear if they think Scotty and Carolyn are actually hooking up, or just realize that whether or not they are it's not something that needs to be looked into.

...Ruth hooked up with a Beowulfan....
Trying to decide who turns backflips on this one, Elizabeth, Michael, Judith, or....

Actually I'm thinking it would be fun to hook Ruth up with a Clinksdale, given that would make her family (and sorta including Torch) sept and 100% under the protection of the overall Harrington Steading, plus because Judith was originally from Grayson. Talk about family ties!

Speaking of which.... Picture this one: poor Scotty is invited to attend a Cinderaella at the Ball festival/event on Grayson, hosted by Steadholder Harrington, of course.

Ouch...

given that ruth is single that could work, she's not very close (4th?) to the throne so the marry a commoner part of the constitution may not be really in force, but it no doubt could be helpful and an excellent way of given them some leverage against the nutters of masada.
