Got some more interesting posts. Just a reminder to everyone: PLEASE DO NOT POST SPOILERS OF UPCOMING NOVEL MATERIAL!

A speculation I've got is that Merlin and/or Nimue Chwaeriau might accidentally trigger either active or passive sensors that are buried underground in the Zion area that are away from the Temple proper, but hardwired to the Temple, and activate the 1000 check-the-planets-current-situation system.

Of course, it might just activate a smaller system to check things out, including but not limited to PICAs that Ark Command Crew might have left behind.

1) Imperial Charis is NOT SECURE with a single heir.

2) Nahrmahn's 'Widow', Ohlyvya, is too much in hiding as 'Regent?' of Emerald - expect changes there.

Nah, that is what usually happens. A shocker would be that something nice happens to Joe and he doesn't die or get maimed for life.

Has Joe shown up? Did I miss him in the language shift?

Don't think so, I guess the kid just wanted to make sure if Joe shows up he dies. :D

I can see the final scene of the final book in my mind's eye right now.

Right at the climax of the final battle with the Gaba when Merlin is standing on the bridge of the SDN flagship of the Safehold Confederation fleet.....
(Spoiler Space to Follow)

Honor is awakened by Hamish coming out of the bathroom telling her to get up and shower or they'll be late for Raoul's graduation from Saganami Island and she tells him she just had the strangest dream.

Lol
The old dream in a shower scene. Classic.

How about this?

There are micro-SNARCs that can fly into someone's ear canal and monitor. Merlin is only willing to use them outside the Temple. Duchairn is the only Go4 member who leaves the building regularly. He doesn't discuss sensitive topics outside, so not much point in "putting a bug in his ear" when he goes out and having it fly out again before he heads back inside.

UNLESS

the micro-SNARCs have, or can be made with, tiny speakers. Then Duchairn could hear voices. The voices could build credibility by telling him things like next week's weather that could not have come from any known source. They could tell him nice reassuring things about how God values Duchairn's charity work.

Then, once he trusts the voices, one of them could say "All you have to do is manipulate Clyntahn into taking a field command or simply going out into the city, and God will take him home".

Next best thing to having an agent in the Temple.

Which could also be done, using blackmail from SNARCs or sex workers to coerce someone into following orders from the Charis secret service. Basic spycraft and doesn't expose high tech to the Temple building sensors.

Joe Buckley becomes reactionary scientific journalist in chief and spends his life arguing that everything Mahklyn says is wrong, and gets busted every time.

Payback for his real activity, you see ...

That would be nice... also, kind of creepy for Duchairn, I guess, but generally it would probably work. The problem, however, is that Melin wants to break the hold the CoGA has over Safehold. Having one of chief "commanders" of the Church suddenly start hearing "God's" voice won't help in that.

There's also the fact that Merlin has thrown the "posing as a divine messanger" option out of the window almost the moment he came up with it.

Which could also be done, using blackmail from SNARCs or sex workers to coerce someone into following orders from the Charis secret service. Basic spycraft and doesn't expose high tech to the Temple building sensors.

This one seems to have greater chances of success, even though I can't see Merlin engage in non-James Bond-esque spycraft. Someone call Aivah, perhaps?

Generally, I'd love to see some kind of espionage plot in HFQ. It was nice when Irys and Daivyn had to be whisked out, and here it could turn out even better.

Yes, you're completely right about Merlin not wanting to create God's Voice, and flagged the multiple reasons.

I'm imagining that the voice is honest but mysterious, as Merlin was. "I am neither angel nor demon". Then it quotes the passage in the Writ closest to Corinthians 13: "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."

That approach would also be a huge risk since it would make Duchairn curious. Of all the Go4 I think he's the most likely to investigate and find out about a mystery.
