Oh, and I see no reason for a religion section; we are a relatively small board in the great scheme of things, and there are no lack of places you can go to argue such topics as God and faith and such.

Doesn't that apply to every topic of discussion in Free Range?

Never said we couldn't discuss God; just don't see a need for a separate forum.

I think most folks here go other places. I looked at the last 10 pages of this sub-forum (back to March 2014) and only 7 other threads had as many as 100 posts: Thier topics were:

*Non-Honorverse One-liners: (pretty non-confrontational)
*Self-Proclaimed One-lines: (again, noch much to debate)
NASA Space ship (interesting but non-contreversial discussion)
* Ebola Virus: Got a bit heated but petered out.
* A-10 Warthog: More 3-4 posters arguing over minueta
* Microsoft Tech Support in India: Really don't remember much on this one except the OP was agin it.
* Rediscovery of Technology: Mildly intense but the majority of it did provide discussion.

Not all that much. And given most of the MWW readers give this place a quick scan (seldom have seen anyone but me in it when I visit), while concentrating on Mr. Weber's writings (as I try to do), I doubt it will ever be a major part of the board; one that should exist, I grant you, but not be expanded beyond it's current confines.

IMHO as always. YMMV.

PS-the politics subsection has an additional 4 threads with 100+ posts-in 2.5 years...

Maybe we can have four (4) new areas. Religion, Politics, Death and Taxes. Sounds good to me. My apology. I did not intend for Duckkee to KILL or FREEZE the "God Exists" thread.

But - you could argue that Politics includes Taxes, and Religion includes Death...

You can discuss any topic here, but the Duckk will close any thread where comments get to vitriolic and personal. He generally tolerates a little higher level of rhetoric in Politics but has closed thread there too when things got ou of hand.

Agreed. However, being the pessimistic fellow I am, I predict that any new Religion thread will eventually degenerate into the same as the old thread.

Eventually is the key. Duckk specifically stated that religion threads were NOT banned, just that particular one. Initially there was some very interesting discussion before it deteriorated. And I suspect new threads will follow the same path. Someone will post a religious topic, interesting discussion will follow, it will deteriorate until Duckk has to close it....

Indeed so, Michael. Yet in all discussions it is the merits of the ideas that make the interaction interesting. All too often discussions often these topics elicit a pejorative response. That somehow simply to disagree with a POV deserves ridicule. That's a real pity. I for one enjoy discussing things civilly with others that disagree with me. One can learn quite a bit from alternative points of view.

Simple rule suggestion.
First one to resort to actual insults loses.
Me and my friends used to have huge arguments, but with this rule in place, we were forced to listen to the other one in order to blow holes in their logic since if we went down the "No, you idiot" path, we would lose instantly.
It certainly livened things up nicely.
