With the caveat that so-far the IAN doesn't have a direct beef with the Sollies, I think you can bet there is no fondness for Frontier Fleet and OFS's cozy arrangements either. The Andermani aristocracy at least has a reputation for taking care of their citizenry more honorably. I'd think that both plot-wise and logical HonorVerse wise, the first time that FF puts their hand in the proverbial chopper, the IAN will have been instructed to cut the offending appendage off and turn it into the a yet another GA induced debris field. In German and Chinese, of course.

on the subject of Andermani getting treecats, I'd imagine they'd still sign the generic (English I'm assuming) language of Manticore.

Chien-lu speaks English fluently, and I believe there are a few other occasions where IAN personnel are encountered (by Honor or others) where face-to-face they spoke common language (not over ship to ship, where translator programs can be used).

-When Honor commanded her first destroyer, pre-Crusher and did her little "free the slaves" I think it was an Andermani ship captain who invited her to a lunch. Might have been a Silly though, I'll track that down.
-When Honor used the first ever FTL signal to an IAN heavy cruiser, against the Peeps using that super-grav lance experiment.

San Martino's also appear to be English-speakers, such as the SS female captain during "In Enemy Hands" and lifted Honor out of her chair by the hair. Used "chica" and some other Spanish slurs, but otherwise gave her instructions clearly. This would give the impression that the whole universe has adopted a common language, again I'm assuming English since it is more or less accepted already in the business and scientific worlds today.

So when the 'cats get sent anywhere, it's probable that just the one "How to Sign to your 'cat" instruction booklet goes with. And the 'cats will just learn the other languages like they have with English, and transmit that understanding to each other, during 'vists home'.

Another possibility for languages and cats, would be a few Memory Singers volunteer, and Manticore has some Singers flitting about in a courier boat, to pick-up and pass on language studies between the various 'cat colonies. Havenite patois (French Im guessing), Andermani German, San Martin Spanish, and Manticoran English, would all be passed around.

My memory is he was a "good Silesian". A rare animal indeed.

I stand corrected then, good sir. I hadn't been able to find which book/verse it was yet to confirm on my end. Least this time I threw out an anchor, memory likes to play the oddest tricks sometimes.

I've asked a friend who is a linguist and Honorverse fan, she said that the cats wouldn't have to learn a new form of TSL. The Andies would have to learn to read TSL and transliterate the signs into German or Chinese. The cats may have to come up with signs for words in German or Chinese, but are not in English.

The issue wouldn't be the cats understanding the Andermani, presuming that they used English. They have understood English for generations. The understandability issue is from the human side. The Andermani have to learn the sign language to understand the cats.

Only because the power of plot has kept the 'cats from getting sign to English translating devices that are definitely possible with Honorverse tech ...
