Very Intresting turn this thread has taken. I would like to point out that although Kau-Yung's people were military, they were TF Navy personnel, not necessarily ground troops, and thus not necessarily any better at ground operations than Langhorneites. And once the Langhornites starting waking up former ground military personnel, such as the Sgt-Major / seijin Kory, the balance would definitely tip in their favour.

An additional question I have is why do space forces always get called navies? Why not (in this case) Terran Federation Space Force? A bit clumsier perhaps, and I realize that, like wet navies, space forces are able to travel vast distances on their own to exert influence and protect commerce but I am pretty sure that Like air forces everywhere that were seen as an adjunct to land forces (US Army Air Force, Royal Flying Corps) they want to be their own creature.

Maybe because they bop around in ships?

We know there were like a hundred adam and eves that were hidden from the records. SOme likely go involved in the conflict, but i wonder, did either side make any of these 100 into their own warriors, either seigin or demons.

Vessels, they bop around in space vessels. They call them ships because navies bop around in ships.

Are you refering to those Adams and Eves like Jeremiah and Evelyn Knowles who were reeducated and then moved to other enclaves by Shan-wei?

There is no answer to your question of which I'm aware. Intriguing question, though.

No, they call them ships because Science Fiction authors have called them "spaceships" for longer than Science Fiction has been a recognized genre.

Also, this is David Weber. He ALWAYS calls space forces the "Navy" despite most cinematic sci fi not doing so.

In fact, movie/TV sci fi at times seem to out of their way of calling space forces a "navy". This is most clearly seen in Star Trek where space military (or para-military in the case of the protagonists) are always called "Fleet" and NEVER "Navy".

Just goes to show how little imagination SF authors have

I had read that snippet and found it hard to reconcile with what came afterward (i.e. what he had learned and how he was being so careful). A "two-faced" Scheuler might account for it.

What series are you reading? Of course Scheuler was two-faced! He was pretending to be an Archangel for goodness sake!

As regards the course of the war against the fallen, maybe its logistics again. Whoever had control of the Hamilcar and its huge fabrication facilities had an enormous logistical advantage in the long run. If that was Khody's side as seems likely, they may have been at a numerical or experientiial disadvantage to start with, but once they got going producing Seijins and all the hi-tech equipment for them they could have manufactured their way to victory.

As regards Kau Ying's people, just before Nimue beats up that hapless guard officer in LAMA, she muses on the composition of TF forces.

the Federation’s military by the time of Operation Ark had boarded a strength of over two point seven billion active-duty human beings, ninety percent of them combat personnel, and approximately half of them female human beings. A quarter of whom were Marines

In that kind of war what they wanted 650 million+ Marines for is anyone's guess. (Police state?) But the point for here is that Kau Yung might well have had a significant number of Marines under his command - there had to be some provision to allow the command team to maintain order.

The seijin were created by awakening dormant memories of existing skills rather than teaching skills the individual does not possess. Nimue the younger learned hand to hand skills through her high speed data port. One assumes the same could be done for the Adams. Obviously for exceptional people like Khody, he is better using the skills and experience of his past life. This might be the determining factor in the chosen method for seijin creation.

Taking this approach would guarantee other memories awakening. Which memories awakening is unknown but that those memories will awaken is a near certainty. The people advocating this strategy must know that this would introduce the concept of a pre Safehold past into Langhorne's perfect creation myth. That would sound intolerably dangerous for anyone truly committed to Langhorne and Bedard's plan of an unassailable false theology.

It strikes me that seijin and the way they were created are the proofs that Langhorne's true believers lost the war of succession. Whoever took over the CoGA inserted changes to accepted doctrine evidenced by the Books of Chihiro and Shueler. Seijin Khody's journal and the Sister of St. Khody might well turn out to be the corroboration to undermine the changes in the Writ represented by those two books. Perhaps not proof that they are not divine, but evidence that they are at best secondary to the original Writ and the Testimonies. Further proof that the archangels continued to muck about with God's plan and doing so with that less than perfect insight inherent in both archangels and mankind. (Khody's Journal might well support the Journal of St. Zherneau when the Truth is ready to be revealed.)

If that logic can be sustained, might it not follow that God allowed those with less than perfect knowledge to adjust His plan? He could have intervened when Shueler and Chihiro added their changes. He did not. It follows that He allowed it, not wanted it to happen perhaps but allowed it none the less. If he allowed one group of proven less than perfect minds to interpret his plans, might he not allow other minds to do the same...human ones?
