The Temple—How might it be taken?

Oh, I know. Right now I'm cherishing the mental image of Charisian soldiers charging up the Temple's front steps, and Grand Inquisitor Clyntahn standing on the steps screaming at them that they can't do this, that this is God's temple, how dare they tresspass upon it, etc., etc.,... and then him dropping dead of apoplexy.

Not to throw a monkey wrench in everyone's assault plans, but do you think that someone as fanatical as Langhorne would set everything up on Safehold and then.... just die naturally?

I'd bet you all a batch of cookies that Langhorne and his mninion's PICA's are slumbering away in the basement of that temple, ready to wake up once energy signatures or some other trigger is detected by the temple sensors...

And that will be quite a battle...

Well, he didn't die naturally, as he got a face full of nuclear explosion...

Langhorne was killed along with most of his inner circle when Pei set off a pocket nuclear bomb inside Langhorne's headquarters. That started the War of the Fallen, a fight for succession between the surviving followers of Langhorne. The ones who survived that War continued acting as Archangels for quite a bit longer. They were all getting old when they gave their last benedictions to the people of Safehold. We don't really know who they were, how fanatical they were, what their plans were. We certainly cannot say that they were fanatical enough to do as you suggest; nor can we say they weren't. That's what the speculation is about.

Well, I think that what happened to Langhorne was "natural" enough for anyone with a face full of nuclear explosion... I don't think that it would be "natural" for anyone to survive that set of circumstances. So we can say that Langorne got a face full of nuclear explosion and naturally he died.

Has anyone considered just blockading the place? Block the Mighty Langhorne canal and the whole city will starve. Let the people leave into camps where they'll be fed and housed, except for the Priests, and they'll hold the place without closely approaching it. And some payback for Siddermark in the response.

Maybe that is too harsh for Cayleb, but I think the Siddermarkians would go for it.

That is one of the various alternatives under discussion. The potential weakness of the idea rests in the question about whether or not the besiegers themselves would have secure supply lines to sustain the siege over the time needed to achieve the objective.

Not quite, we know that Chihiro and Schueler were amongst the (surviving) leaders of the surviving/winning/trucing faction(s).
We know this because the Chihiro and Schueler's books were added afterwards, and the Temple wasn't built until later, and the Key given to the Wylsynn's by Schueler is intended for something under the Temple.

Beyond that, though, we've got very little in the way of evidence.
