Wouldn't one or more have to be outside the Temple proper for them to be accessible for hacking?

Hi SYED,

Excellent point!

Who knows, we may have Merlin or someone in the inner circle wondering how to get into the possibly locked or fortified temple and spot a 'holy servitor' outside doing its routine maintenance, and realise that could take a SNARC sensor or two back inside if its inside the 'holy servitor', or if it gets a good look at the 'holy servitor' make a copy or copies to attempt entry etc.

While there would be some safeguards, I'm not that impressed with the archangels' security systems we've seen so far, and if they thought they had destroyed all other federation tech, they might not have predicted and prevented this approach.

From the textev, SNARC's or their miniature sensors weren't used in the 'war of the fallen' or before, since Jeremy Knowles and the rest of Shan Wei's 'second string' etc would have been spotted by the watching Langhornites and eliminated immediately or at least long before they could ever set up St. Zherneau's and Saint Evehlain's etc, NTM seeing the SSK had moved his body before the OBS strike.

So its quite possible that thinking all hostile federation tech had been destroyed, they didn't outfit the servitors to recognise things like SNARC sensors, or possibly other possible older tech sensors that didn't trigger federation alarms, which Nahrmahn might have OWL investigating. :D

Congratulations on finding a possible weakness.

Could someone post some of those quotes about holy servitors?

If I'd read that term before I'd just have thought that it ment dedicated human workers, so I'd like to have another look.

Having dead tree versions only makes searching for specific terms rather tedious!

Thanks

In the copies that I have, the word "servitors" only appears one time, and NOT in conjunctions with the word "Holy." :?

Most of what I have searchable is eARCs, so there may be occurrences that a quick search for that one word won't pick up because of typos or formatting codes.

Thanks & interesting.

BTW what was the occurence?

[Edit] in wikipedia, these seem to be basically servants or undergraduates who served others to reduce their fees, i.e. humans.

I also see that it is used in WarHammer 40000 for mindless drones. I'm wondering if there is some cross over going on here in the early posts on this thread :-) [/edit]

Merlin's first meeting with King Haarahld:

"Seijin Merlin, Your Majesty," the chamberlain said quietly as he stepped through the open doorway and bowed. Merlin followed him into the small presence chamber—more of a working office, really, it seemed—and bowed a bit more profoundly than the chamberlain. King Haarahld's court was looked down upon by the courtiers of such sophisticated lands as Harchong because of its casual informality and ability to get along without a veritable horde of servitors. Still, Haarahld was a king, and one of the more powerful ones on the face of Safehold, whatever others might think.

Understood, but sooner or later a problem occurs that can't be dealt with by a given set of program parameters, such as the need to arrange for the substitution of a resource for another resource that's no longer available or a myriad of other things that need to be dealt with that require the creativity of sentience to handle. As good as you can visualize computers being, there are limits in all things...including this.

Don

If you have a sufficiently advanced technology it can function indefinitely as long as it has its energy requirements met.

Regarding the maintenance bots in the temple, they have access to raw material to keep functioning because they are the ones that clean the temple and takes care of the trash - which should be enough to keep them working.

For all we know, there could be a provision in the Writ that mandates some basic resupply for the maintenance drones. "Thou shalt leave a pile of bauxite in the janitor's closet."

For some reason I think you put the quotes wrong:

Thou shalt leave a pile of "bauxite" in the janitor's closet.
