Currently Charis has the ability to make a large amount of steel thistle which is stronger than silk and if you use multiple layers of silk you can make a bullet proof vest. Also Charis is and to produce armor plate so I feel they should probaly at least start issueing a Safehold equivalent of a flak jacket. Both of these will be a bit expensive but would increase a soldiers survivabioity on the battle field which can only be a good thing for an out numbered but qualitatively superior force like the Charisian empire and the Republic of Siddarmark.

I agree, just as soon as the Army of God starts showing up with rifles and you can find some pigeon to suddenly think up the idea. Be nice if the Inner circle could get someone to look at better ceramics too. Good armor is a mix of metal and ceramic plate. And simply playing around with clay can't possibly be against the Proscriptions now can it?

True but ceramics are a bit more complex than steel or steel thistle plus there is already a manufacturing base for both steel armor and steel thistle while as far as we know there is no ceramic manufacturing base.

Wonder if there is some good deposits of non-Newtonian clays on Safehold, I'm sure someone can come up with some practical use for it (like in bulletproof vests).

I think that someone already talked about about bulletproof vests in the discussion about steel thistle vests being worn by BGV's infantry leaving Allyntyn.

IIRC they already use ceramics for the waterworks and sewage pipes.

If steel thistle has equivalent strength to Kevlar then four layers will stop a rifle bullet (modern soft vests have twenty layers to be sure) but then you need to spread the energy over a larger area to reduce blunt impact injury (kevlar stretches so you still die even if the bullet doesn't penetrate). Ceramic plates spread the force (and blunt hardened tips of steel jacketed rounds) so hardness and light weight are key to performance, alumina, steel thistle reinforced plastic composite or even hardened tool steel should work if boron carbide is too hard to manufacture. The large caliber (1/2") of the rifle bullets will help as they will be moving relatively slowly and and be relatively soft lead (not steel or copper jacketed).

Lightweight ceramics in bulk may be a bit much for Charis immediately. But steel thistle vests should satisfy at least a bullet resistant goal.

What are ICA helmets like currently?

Depending on what resins may be available, ceramic armors may not be needed. Besides Kevlar, the other main fiber used in body armor is based on Spectra.

Steel thistle coated with the proper resin will work as trauma plates. As a side effect, it can also be used as vehicle armor.

If they've got plates and cups, then they have a ceramics industry of sorts.
