I am pretty sure that with federation nanotechnology Merlin could make some killer nanobots put them on a letter and arrange it so that the grand inquisitor and rayno we the only ones who touch it. He could also make the nanobots kill them in such a way that is indistinguishable from a natural deisese. Now I know that Merlin might have some issues with this but he has already sworn to kill the grand inquisitor at the earliest moment so he might actually use this idea.

There is just one little problem with this idea, do you or anyone else except RFC know if the Temple has scanners that can detect nano-bots? Because, if it does have those scanners all matter of sh!t is going to start happening which in all likelihood will be very bad for Merlin and Charis in general. For example, it's entirely possible that the Rakurai goes into active scan-mode and starts looking for tech. Aside from the ethical side, I doubt Merlin is willing to chance that he wakes up whatever is sleeping below the Temple. A far simpler solution would be to just shot Clynthan with a sniper-rifle while he is gloating over some poor sod getting burned on the square of the martyrs. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

While emotionally satisfying I wonder if it's wise they might get competent leadership in the temple. After all The Grand Inquisitor is the greatest military genius, not, since Der Fuher, Adolf Hitler.

And I bet Merlin would take it, but that square is also in the temple precinct and he probably doesn't dare to go as near as needed to take the shot. However, why not drop 16 tons of solid steel - O.K. better make that 16 pounds - on Clyntahn? You could release a steel dart from the skimmer at high altitude with relatively moderate velocity . If you can install some simple guidance, you might get Clyntahn almost "on his pulpit". And it'd be the Rakurai principle. Won't happen, though. |

Well, i think it would be possible to create a short-range biological weapon for that reason. Presumably the binary version; with two viruses, that became pathogenic only in complex, and also unable to spread. The first virus is short-lived, and its only function is produce the RNA inside the target body, that the second need to activate.
So... we spreas the first virus into the Temple, and then infect the letter for Clyntahn with the second virus. Only the person who contacted both viruses would be affected. ------------------------------

This wouldn't work in or around the Temple but in BSRA (I think) Merlin muses about his SNARC remotes having incendiary packages that would be too obvious to use. Replace the incendiaries with micro syringes and fill them with the Safehold equivalent of Botulinum toxin or better yet a mix of several poisons. Your king or general goes to sleep, is attacked by "fleas" than passes away. A post-mortem may find "bug" bites and if you use a poison mix, your healer priest probably will be confused by the various symptoms.

I'm not sure that Merlin - or, in fact, any of the Inner Circle - should actually be wanting to assassinate any of the Group of Four, and specifically not Clyntahn (or Rayno). Right now, the way the Group of Four is conducting the war against Charis (and Reformism) is very nearly the best medium- and/or long-term ally that Merlin and (separately!) the EoC have; the more that highly-intelligent opponents see of the difference between the EoC/CoC and the CoGA, and think about who benefits from the actions that Clyntahn attributes to the EoC, the more likely they are to become disaffected, and maybe defect - not to mention the way that the Inquisition has taken to treating commanders who lose to Charis, even when the loss is unavoidable.
Even if you discount the 'out-Island' rulers (currently the various princes of the EoC), you've still got the examples of Kohlmahn and Jahras, Coris and Irys, and even Thirsk (if he could figure out how to get his family out). On top of that, Clyntahn has driven Stohnar (and a good chunk of the people of the Republic of Siddarmark) into the EoC's arms (even given that they were halfway there already) and Nynian (by whatever name) is a completely independent operator strongly allied with Charis (or maybe Charis is allied with her, given that her operations predate the Charisian refusal to die on command). I don't see this as being a short war, though - if anything, it'll end up being a generational war, especially in western Siddarmark and points west on Haven, and even taking Zion and the Temple won't end it; the remnants of the CoGA hierarchy can relocate to Harchong and continue the fight, and there will probably be Temple Loyalists remaining pretty much everywhere, but potentially a majority in Haven and Howard. That's my analysis, anyway; RFC has his own, and hasn't made us privy to much of it. I'm eagerly awaiting further snippets and further books. |

I don't think it can last much longer; the Temple side does not innovate, and any innovator (like that liutenant in Dohlaran Navy) is watched with suspicion and is always a candidate for the Punishment if the Inquisition wants to vent some angst on someone. The Charisian side innovates. Split the world in two, let the Charisians innovate and develop industry unhindered for 50 years, the other side won't have a snowflake's chance in hell. That's even if you stop short of Proscriptions. Or the Temple side could, as a survival measure, start innovating. In which case they will hit the level where they will start questioning Proscriptions, and seeing "mystical" devices in the Temple as simply a product of higher level craft, not magic or divine influence. Also, keep in mind that Nimue's cave was undiscovered (by the Temple and the OBS) all this time. Given enough time, Owl and Howsmyn could put a workforce in there (if you tell them the full story, after a careful selection) to expand it, and make a small underground shipyard which would be deep enough to be hidden, and build some sort of a secret door... well, there already is one, but only big enough for assault shuttles or several skimmers in a row. Maybe just widen it a bit. Doesn't have to be capable of building SDs. A cruiser or a destroyer will do the job of blasting the OBS into space dust and then they can hang ominously over the Temple in case anything wakes up there. |

then comes the other question.. do you want to kill them?
without a doubt they are despicable characters who need to face some form of justice in the end. But at this time their blunders and errors due to blindly thrashing about is helping more than hurting. Would we really want to cut off the head of the snake so to speak and find that we have instead of solving the problem. arranged to our dismay a power vacuum that is filled by someone or thing just as ruthless but far smarter and methodical about its decisions. Deal with the Devil you know? |
