RE: Manhattan project. Look at the centrifuge production line. That was a real accomplishment! Not to mention working with UF6.
Also, there wasn't even total agreement about the results of the first test! And, they didn't have any help or guidance, just a theory!!! I have no problem with the Houseman works advances, it's just a matter of more-bigger, more-bigger several times under a crushing necessity of produce or die! A pretty good incentive, wouldn't you say? |

The problem is not the blueprints. The problem is building time and capabilites. If you are on a distant island with only a stone axe and a complete blueprints for supercomputer, how long it would take you to actually build the one? You may have blueprints, but you need the tools and materials to build something based on this blueprints. And this take a lot of time - especially if you are forced to build all by himself, and can't trade anything from more advanced neighbour. ------------------------------
Oh well, if shortening the front is what the Germans crave, Let's shorten it to very end - the length of Fuhrer's grave. (Red Army lyrics from 1945) |

One possible source for an epic disaster is that they get a gas leak that pools and then eventually explodes. FAE's can be quite destructive..

I don't think it would be that bad. After all, Delthak itself didn't exist a handful of years ago. It is critical though, and losing a big part of its production for the year or so to repair the damage would be a severe setback. But there are other shipyards in the empire, albeit less capable. I think that part of the reason for starting other manufacturing centers is to eliminate Delthak as a single point of failure. The textev mentions a new manufactory in Chisholm for one example. Also, Delthak is a huge site. I don't think any plausible accident can disable the whole complex. jms |

But they're also a bear to get just right. Ordinary gas explosions, OTOH, while less damaging happen all the time. Delthak is spread across several square miles. I don't see anything short of a ship filled with gunpowder or a strike by the Rakurai taking out a large part of it. But key people are another matter... jms |

Ummh, Manhattan did not go the centrifuge route. They also had a collection of some of the brightest people in a country of a hundred million (and then some) people. |

SAy the throne back the spread of delthak industrial sites to the rest of the empire, look at the out put of the original site. IT out performed a good percentage of hte mainland nations by itself. If all the imperial sites are fully established and and activated, they will have fully become an industrialized nation, the fist of safehold.
They would literally be able to out do the whole world combined. THey could invest in building the whole fleet into actual modern ships. It wont matter the mainland nations out number them so much, or even if they loose the republic. Their fleet would own the oceans, and every major port is just another target to hit. Charis was able to make alot of money as their goods were so much cheaper than the home grown goods. WIth them fully industrialised,, they can sell goods in greater numbers and cheaper prices, even with any extra overheads concerning any possible smuggling costs. Any potential disasters are likely to occur to those that dont have the best of intentions, like that guy who hired all those kids. I think any disaster that occurs will be used to improve conditions and set new standards. |

I stand corrected. They started to, but didn't get good results. And, they spent over 20 billion dollars, I think. WWII over 3 trillion, per dod analysis. |

And took approximately 15% of the war effort, by the time they were done. |

And the South Africans built ~10 nuclear weapons for US$100 Million in the 1970's and early 1980's. Once you know how its not too hard. (South Africa is also the only country to unilaterally disarm - they scrapped the nuclear force in 1989). |
