Hi AClone,

while I have a vague similar memory, I've not yet found it.

Do you remember what the thread title might have been?

The only comment I've found is "Tum-te-tum" etc, though there are almost 10 pages of winter mobility references, but none specific to ice boats or yachts.

Hi GCM,

Any time spent foraging delays BGV's advance, when celerity is critical.

Given the evident depth of the snow drifts etc at such high latitudes on a planet rather cooler than earth, I doubt any army would rely on foraging to maintain its animal powered momentum.

However, yes, you're right: lock chambers are emptied and the lower gates left open to prevent ice damage to the lock. I think that the up-stream gates are left open or closed depending on water supply: afaik the preference is to drain the canal entirely, but if there's too much water at the upper end because the source level never drops below the canal bed even in winter the upper gates will be left closed to limit flow in the canal itself. The Rideau Canal at Ottawa is a good example: except for the highest one, the gates in the final flight of locks are left open and all the chambers drained, while the canal upstream to the next flight is half-drained - and turned into the world's longest skating rink.

What the current water levels are in the Guarnak-Ice Ash is impossible to guess. They're also impossible to manage.

Hi Don,

RFC has warned us to expect the inner circle is doing the smart thing even if he doesn't mention it all in the textev.

Given the tonnages I've mentioned up thread for a 1200 mile advance over probably less than 60 days, the math indicates increasingly diminishing returns if relying solely upon animal transport.

Given RFC's track record of thinking these things out better than we have, I'm confident he has a reasonable solution, but he has been rather sneaky as well, and using ice boats/yachts seem right up BGV's [ie RFC's] alley.

Is there any textev to suggest that BGV has a logistics issue at all? I can see the logic of the discussion, given the length of his supply lines, but no evidence from the text?

I can see what you mean about the diminishing results for animal power. I think that if I were to organize it using animal power, I would probably set it up in relays and try to have enough of whatever I was using to rest about one day of every three. Or perhaps there is a better ratio. At any rate, the concept would be to avoid wearing the animals out. Of course, then you would have to figure out along with it the additional food for the hay burners.
