If anything, I'd peg Trynair as the PICA instead of Clyntahn. He's a much more rational actor and the Chancellor post is (or used to be) the best place to manipulate and control everything.
Of course, this still runs into the problem of why he didn't recognize things like Arabic numerals. Or why he doesn't have his own network of SNARCs watching the world and reporting to him the way Merlin does. |

I think that we need to see a lot less of his flesh and a lot more of his blood. |

Yes. Preferably no longer in contact with one another. The relationship just isn't good for anyone else. |

No. Clyntahn is the best thing that could have happened for Merlin's mission. Remember, the moral authority of COGA has to be broken - people have to stop believing them. How much harder would it be to fight it if a honest but true believer like one of older Wylsyns was leading it? With Clyntahn, it is much easier for common people to believe that Church is led by fallible men and that they shouldn't listen to every word from vicars. He and Inquisition give justification for war, indeed they started it. And their atrocities, especially in contrast to the Church of Charis and Maikel Staynair, make people believe that COGA is wrong and COC is right. Yes, I know, this is a Machiavel... err... NahrmahnBaytzian attitude. But it's true nonetheless. |

No doubt Clyntahn being in power has accelerated the process, however the slower path may have cost fewer lives in the end if only we weren't already under a time crunch from a possible reawakening of one of the "angels". Doesn't hurt to wish. Besides, at this point, I doubt that Clyntahn living any longer will have much of an effect on how the war ends. After all, the church budget is already so far in the red that the only way they will ever recover is to sue for pease, and I'm not so certain that getting totally rid of the CoGA is such a good idea. . No, despite the level of medical care on Safehold life expectancies and infant mortality is probably atrocious, better than I might think because the of the book of Pasquale, but still bad. They have no penicillin or other antibiotics, among other things so any bad disease would kill allot of people. Plus this is the future were talking about and while Safeholdian lives are bad compared to developed world life in the developed world they are in the Dark Ages(Early Medieval era) compared to Nimu's time. Just for starters the Federation had cured Alzheimer(Grey mists), all viruses and bacterial infections(medical nanos) and had medical treatments that extended life expectancies to the three century mark. Shortening the time it would take to reach that level of technology by a couple decades does more for Safehold than averting some of the carnage of the Jihad ever could. However, I have to say this. Clyntahn still needs to be killed, because if the inner circle doesn't kill him given the chance then they need a Hitler rationalization. If the inner circle doesn't then when this is revealed they could lose the public moral high ground Note: Hitler Rationalization: The United Kingdom had some plans to kill Hitler but didn't carry them out because it could 'cause' 'reprisals', also Hitler may actually have been insane and certainly did a great deal of damage to the German war effort in the last years of the war. |

You sure about this? Because I can easily see antibiotic recipes being in the Holy Writ. God knows, they included all sorts of other things as well to prevent plague and epidemic. So why not include recipes for "holy medicines" or whatever they'd be called in a learn-by-rote tradition? Edit: Also, if the Holy Writ DIDN'T include antibiotic recipes, I'd think they'd be on the short list of inventions Merlin would have initially given to Charis. |

Flesh and blood, certainly, but he's definitely not pure! (Unless you meant evil that is...) "Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear. |
