Stop trying to make sense of it. It's a cover illustration!

The cover always has Nimue Alban on it. Now that there's two of her, she'll both be on it. If they ever build another one, there'll be 3 of her ;)

well, yes, that's a given

logic, however, is rarely of much use when interpreting covers. that's why I said there's no point in trying to get it to make sense. wild speculation inspired by the theme of the cover is likely to get a lot closer to the reality.

The woman is mostly in shadow, since it would appear this scene either takes place at during a storm and possibly at night.

That said, it looks to me that her hair isn't short, it's pulled back and either tied or braided to lay along her neck. Color isn't obvious either, since it's mostly lit by the explosion and fire. Could be blond, could be amber/red. Hard to say. If you go back to the cover of LAMA, you see Nimue with her hair tied back and, along the lit edges, very similar to the color shown in the HFQ cover, as well.

In addition, since there are only 3 known katana's on Safehold, and it's obviously a woman - rather than Merlin or Cayleb, it's pretty much a given it must be Nimue.

One other point - if one is going to use some type of energy weapon from a flying platform, the best time would probably be during a storm with lots of lightning and cloud cover, which could possibly disguise the discharges from the orbital platform sensors, if it has any that are actually scanning the planet.

Yes but why on earth (or Safehold) would you do it to a ship which has both Merlin and Nimue within sight. Much easier for one of them to swim over underwater with a nice dynamite bomb to screw into the keel. You can probably use a plausible clockwork timer, or if you have to use higher tech it's a very low energy circuit and shielded by the whole hull of the ship.

There was another cover that made it look like a recon skimmer was bombing a battlefield position. I suspect that this one is equally as accurate.

The other problem is that who ever it was that drew the cover has most likely read the complete ARC or raw book for the idea. He may even be a fan on this site. He has read it and we haven't, YET

SNIPPETS pleases. MWW/RFC is so kind.

Actually, it is unlikely that the artist has read the draft. Artists usually are not given the draft to read. Usually they just have a description of a single scene, or of elements that should go into the picture.

Mindful of alternative artistic creations, perhaps the error is that the young lady, wearing a frilly dress with chain weave and silk sleeves. has incorrectly been given a sword, so that Nimue is flying the airplane.

Pethaps they are inside a computer projection, as on the last book.
