cthia wrote:Exactly! If you and I could see it ... WTF? Heck, a quarterback sneak would have worked. Russell Wilson is a dangerous runner and a big boy! You don't throw on first down in that situation. Interception chances are very high. I learned that as a midget league quarterback! They were on the half-yard line! The half!

Almost makes me think someone intentionally threw the game!

fallsfromtrees wrote:They passed on second down. First down was Marshawn Lynch for 4.5 yards from the 5 - and you know that the Pats were stacked on the line looking for a run, and he still got 4.5 yards - why not try for 1/2 yard with him?

cthia wrote:Oops. That's right. It was second down. I missed the run, but saw it on replay. There was a Superbowl party at my house (every year) and I have a brand-new, but old model pinball machine in the mancave, Alien Poker and my niece was about to pop it open! She did. I missed the run.

Or he could have play-action faked to Lynch and took it in himself as you said earlier.

Personally, Lynch on a dive. He reminds me of "Refrigerator Perry", Jones-Drew or the "Mack Truck" in his running style.

He was good for a half-yard for damn sure!

fallsfromtrees wrote:Well he had been stopped a couple of times for no gain, but not too often - still worth at least one try.

Worth three more tries to run it in. Remember, second and goal. There wasn't going to be a field goal attempt. Three points wouldn't have helped a 28-24 deficit.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Absolutely. I meant one more attempt ramming Marshawn Lynch into the line, before trying a slightly trickier run, like a fake to Lynch into the line, and Wilson around the end, or a QB sneak. Certainly not a pass - and if a pass, for damn certain not one over the center of the field.

[quote="cthia"]Designer Babies?

Science is beginning to walk in very deep waters.[quote]

No and not really. The third parent only contributes mitochondria, the only effect on the child should be the absence of specific health problems.

I think you missed the main point ...
One concern it cites is whether such DNA alteration could be an early step down a slippery slope toward “designer babies” – ordering up, say, a petite, blue-eyed girl or tall, dark-haired boy.

The United States, a nation ranked 19th in the world's militaries in 1939, emerged six years later as the planet's only superpower.

19th?

Yep. Based (IIRC) by the total number of men under arms, and I am not sure if they counted navies in the mix, just Army (again, IIRC).

Remember, cthia, historically the United States did not have a large military force in times of peace, the 'Minuteman militia" meme was strong for most of our history (when threatened, Americans would rush from hearth and home to the colors and fight off any invader), and the large army gathered for WW I was quickly disassembled in 1919. Add to that the effects of the Great Depression and a strong Isolationist sentiment, and the US Army (and Army Air Force) were simply not a priority for a nation that had depended on two oceans to defend itself for most of it's history.

WW II changed that by promoting us to 'superpower' status and bringing us into direct confrontation with the other 'superpower' remaining after the war (USSR and it's satellite China--thinking 1950's here). That confrontation necessitated a larger military to 'contain' Communist actions around the world, the from there the Military-Industrial complex grew into the 800-lb gorilla it is today.

It's amazing to me sometimes how Manticore (and for that matter, Haven and Grayson) seem to have avoided that. Maybe they read Eisenhowers' words on the subject....

Everyone remembers Eisenhower's warning about the military-industrial complex - do you also remember that in the same farewell address he discussed the reason for the rise of the MIC was the existence of a godless foreign power determined to impose their form of government on the world.

Regarding gene splicing and not American Football, (I for one am NOT a football fan) modern teck will allow lots of stuff to happen in the future. Yep ... the question is how are we, as a species, going to respond to the future potential of doing all sorts of stuff to future mankind. But ... we may have too.

Even living in the moon and mars will present lots of problems. Low gravity will still suck. Future people living in different environments will have to be either adapted to such or genetically modified to live there before hand. Micro gee environments will be even more demanding. Imagine all the changes needed.

In a couple thousand years, we might be on several colony planets that will NOT be the same as Earth. Thus the requirement to modify man and animals to safely live there. All sorts of genetic changes may be needed. In ten thousand years, we may be on 50 different planets. By then we will have many species.

Just me. HB of CJ (old coot)

What's it going to take before certain laws and safety regulations are changed?

A certain thread was sadly, but understandably closed. Understandably, because it got out of hand (passion does that.) Sadly, because this post would perfectly go to cause, as evidence supporting my very passionate position concerning construction site regulations and public safety. Certain injustices leave me in tears...

One57 Tower - Billionaires' Row
We know you're rich. There's no need to bang us over the head with it.

New Yorkers walking along 57th St.'s so-called 'Billionaires' Row' got a nasty shock over the weekend when a four by four-foot piece of Plexiglass fell from the 22nd floor of a glitzy new tower at 157 W. 57th St., crashing onto two parked cars.

The incident prompted the Department of Buildings to halt construction for the third time. Developer Extell Development can’t resume building until it shows it can carry out the job safely, according to the Journal report.

No one has been hurt in any of the three incidents but neighborhood residents are anxious.

"I am petrified to walk on my block with my son," said one local mother, who posted on an Upper East Side mommy blog.

A spokesperson for Extell did not immediately respond to a request for comment but previously told the Journal that the Plexiglass was installed as a temporary measure until specially-ordered custom glass could be delivered.

The 57th St. tower is one of the priciest new buildings in the city and has attracted investors from all over the world. A mystery buyer dropped $100.47 million on a penthouse there, earlier this year.

Residents of 57th St. have already had beef with Extell over construction on the tower.

A crane malfunction at the site during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 left a 35,500-pound weight dangling above the street. Neighbors had to be evacuated.
