Hi Tonto Silerheels,
The figure I remember for Bill Murray in Ground Hog Day was about 8 years or ~3000 times to get it right, which seems about right.

Was reading that the Bill Murray's character spent over thirty years in that do loop in the movie.
I've heard a variety of times, from a low of about three years to a high of ten thousand. Three years sounds a little short. I can imagine spending that long discovering the way to rob the Brinks truck. After all, one would probably try robbing something else first. And you want to rob something early in the day so you would have the use of the money for the longest period.
I've always wondered about his learning the piano. He has to use the woman's piano anew each day, so she has no way to know what lesson to teach him. Continuity of training would be difficult to achieve. Perhaps he can ask her what she will be teaching him "tomorrow"? "Next week?" And it seems strange to me that she would brag that Phil was her student, after all, she had memory of only one day.
Another long time would be spend learning French. The hints are that he learned it on a whim, and only then used it to seduce Rita. With immersion, a language can be learnt in three months, but how likely is it that he got immersed in French in Punxatawney?
And what things did he do that didn't lead directly to February 3rd? There were a lot of suggested dead ends. After all, how many ways did he attempt to kill himself?
I can easily see ten thousand years.
