Designer Babies?

YORK (TheBlaze/AP) — Scientists in Oregon have created embryos with genes from one man and two women, using a provocative technique that could someday be used to prevent babies from inheriting certain rare incurable diseases. At the same time, it is raising a host of ethical issues that other countries conducting the same research are already tackling.

The researchers at Oregon Health & Sciences University said they are not using the embryos to produce children, and it is not clear when or even if this technique will be put to use. But it has already stirred a debate over its risks and ethics in Britain, where scientists did similar work a few years ago.

The British experiments, reported in 2008, led to headlines about the possibility someday of babies with three parents. But that’s an overstatement. The DNA from the second woman amounts to less than 1 percent of the embryo’s genes, and it isn’t the sort that makes a child look like Mom or Dad. The procedure is simply a way of replacing some defective genes that sabotage the normal workings of cells.

The British government is asking for public comment on the technology before it decides whether to allow its use in the future. One concern it cites is whether such DNA alteration could be an early step down a slippery slope toward “designer babies” – ordering up, say, a petite, blue-eyed girl or tall, dark-haired boy.

Questions have also arisen about the safety of the technique, not only for the baby who results from the egg, but also for the child’s descendants.

In June, an influential British bioethics group concluded that the technology would be ethical to use if proven safe and effective. An expert panel in Britain said in 2011 that there was no evidence the technology was unsafe but urged further study.

It is indeed, and it is more than past time that society as a whole started to address these issue. As fans, we probably have a leg up on the discussion, because it is a subject that this been examined in the genre for a considerable length of time.

And a number of those stories have looked at the consequences of not considering how to handle the issues ahead of time.

What the H-E-L-L was Seattle thinking about to attempt a pass from the half-yard line, with a brutalizing runner in the back field?!

A Superbowl WTF!

Agree. Marshawn Lynch up the middle on second down. If he doesn't score. Fake to Marshawn on third, and Wilson on a sweep to the wide side of the field.

Exactly! If you and I could see it ... WTF? Heck, a quarterback sneak would have worked. Russell Wilson is a dangerous runner and a big boy! You don't throw on first down in that situation. Interception chances are very high. I learned that as a midget league quarterback! They were on the half-yard line! The half!

Almost makes me think someone intentionally threw the game!

For once I'd like to win a Superbowl bet against my brother or sister!

They passed on second down. First down was Marshawn Lynch for 4.5 yards from the 5 - and you know that the Pats were stacked on the line looking for a run, and he still got 4.5 yards - why not try for 1/2 yard with him?

Oops. That's right. It was second down. I missed the run, but saw it on replay. There was a Superbowl party at my house (every year) and I have a brand-new, but old model pinball machine in the mancave, Alien Poker and my niece was about to pop it open! She did. I missed the run.

Or he could have play-action faked to Lynch and took it in himself as you said earlier.

Personally, Lynch on a dive. He reminds me of "Refrigerator Perry", Jones-Drew or the "Mack Truck" in his running style.

He was good for a half-yard for damn sure!

Well he had been stopped a couple of times for no gain, but not too often - still worth at least one try.

Worth three more tries to run it in. Remember, second and goal. There wasn't going to be a field goal attempt. Three points wouldn't have helped a 28-24 deficit.

Absolutely. I meant one more attempt ramming Marshawn Lynch into the line, before trying a slightly trickier run, like a fake to Lynch into the line, and Wilson around the end, or a QB sneak. Certainly not a pass - and if a pass, for damn certain not one over the center of the field.
