Does anybody know if Baen books has discontinued the program where they put free CDs inside new hardback books? It has been awhile since I have seen a new release with a CD at the store.

According to Toni Weisskopf they had fulfilled the function. Get people involved and used to E-books. IIRC.

I think she said this right after MoH came out.

No more free "drugs". Now you have to pay!

I suspect, but certainly cannot prove, the when Jim Baen died of a stroke, that the program died with him as soon as the new management could kill it.

IIRC there was something about the program related to the Amazon deal. It was right around the time of that deal that CDs disappeared. Of course I may very well be wrong as well.

Hearsay, but...

It was because of the Amazon deal that the direct downloads and ability to read online at fifth imperium were discontinued.

FWIW, Torch of Freedom was the last CD I know of.

Except that most of the actual book links on the CD pages have been disabled.
Some of the links are still active, so it's not a wasted click.

So you have to download the entire .ZIP or .ISO copy of the CD. Big deal.  Download TorchofFreedom.zip and you get all of the books (in all formats) up to that point in one download. or download the .ISO file and burn a CD so you have a permanent backup copy.

Do you know how long it took me to download all of them over my dialup connection? It was weeks.

All right I don't have the dialup now but I did then. Joe's site was very user friendly when 12 hours were up my provider automatically disconnected me. His site let me pause at 11 hours plus and restart after I disconnected and reconnected.

At the time it was a big deal. :-)

Just had to say it,

Yes, the book links where removed because of Baens deal with Amazon. Joe had a post up about it when the links where removed.
