Port holes were use to allow air to circulate in crews quarters and provide light during the day. However during the Great War (WW1) it was discovered they allowed ships to settle to esily and since electric lights, and force air ventilation were coming on line they were abndoned.
Now Carris is a tropical country so ventilation and lighting during the day are important and not redly available by other means, no electricity or iron rain fallith from heaven, thus portholes are likely

DWell, there is no textev that the ironclads have portholes, and I don't recall seeing them on the drawings for the KHVIIs, so maybe Charis is going to be moving away from them. Still the original post was about a modern US ship. ========================

With a steam powered ship ventilation is at a premium to keep temperatures down so I would expect either large vents or sky lights (possibly with armored covers for combat use). If you dont have refrigerant air conditioning (and your not in the arctic in winter) portholes and skylights are essentials of life on a steam powered ship. In earlier ships gun ports served the same purposes (i.e. big holes for ventilation) with grating hatches on merchant ships providing further ventilation. |
