Hi Saber964,

Not bad, but a couple nits from the ART.

New Tuscany nit: 2 BC's at New Tuscany were taken back to Spindle then Manticore for study.

Spindle: 16 BC's, not 24.

Manticore: 71 SD's damaged, with only 48 DD's in the screen.

Wiki:
Rath was a citizen of the Star Kingdom of Manticore and an officer in the Royal Manticoran Navy.

He held the rank of Captain and commanded HMS Fearless prior to Honor Harrington. Alistair McKeon and Dominica Santos both served under Captain Rath, who was known to love every dent and scrape of the Fearless. (HH1)

I can't quite recollect. Does anyone know what ever happened to Captain Rath? He must have been a decent Captain, having been given Fearless.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

promoted to command of a heavy cruiser, or a staff position, never to be heard from again.

Hm. He was a full Captain, and he was in command a light cruiser, which happened to be of one of the most obsolete models in the RMN at the time. I'm not sure you can conclude that he was a decent captain from that. A light cruiser is usually a Commander's post. Though the crew does seem to have had a good opinion of him, so he may have been a good captain. Maybe he made Captain while in command, and was promoted off the Fearless.

My impression was that he had been promoted to captain, and that was why he was leaving Fearless.

---------------

The CA Fearless was a new-build with HH as first CO.
Rath must have been prior CO of CL Fearless prior to the mod for TWTSNBN

Yes, he is the captain that Honor replaced on the CL Fearless. His name is mentioned in OBS.

Coxswain

The coxswain is the person in charge of a boat, particularly its navigation and steering. The etymology of the word gives a literal meaning of "boat servant" since it comes from cock, a cockboat or other small vessel kept aboard a ship, and swain, an Old English term derived from the Old Norse sveinn meaning boy or servant.

Can someone give me a better etymology or even definition, than this?

How about "helmsman"? The man who steers the boat. That's essentially what the definition means. Note also that Chief Killian is called both coxswain and helmsman at different points in OBS.
