I understand (and share) the frustration many have with DRM. But I suggest that we be somewhat careful about exactly what we say or share in this forum. This is the official website of David Weber, hosted by the author himself. I don't believe anyone here is actually condoning book piracy, but we should try to avoid posts which appear to condone or promote piracy. It's a matter of courtesy to the author. I'm sure we can manage to vent our frustration without crossing that line; I just want to advise caution.

I would like to be able to buy an e-book from the authors web site. He should not undercut his retailers of course, and I will pay a premium for a signed copy. :-)

Much better than Paying Amamzon.

One of the reasons I buy from B&N when I have to, and from Baen most of the time.

I certainly agree with SWM's statement on piracy. Being software developer myself, I understand the problems with IP piracy - I just happen to believe that DRM is the wrong way to go. It effectively considers everyone to be guilty of piracy or considering the act of piracy, and I object to the automatic characterization of myself as a pirate, when I have never committed such an act, and will never consider such an act.

Among other things I need to learn how to get back into this thread. :) I lost my first response so the following is copied from my WP.

Hi all,

Sorry to be so long in responding; several offline situations required solutions.

Thanks to all for your responses and information which helped me move along my learning curve(starting from zero regarding readers :-).

Seems like a good starting point would be to list what hard-/soft-ware I have and what I would like to end up with.

I have a desktop computer with added external USB hard drives for data and one free SATA port. My OS is Fedora Linux v. 19 and I use periodically updated Firefox as my browser.

I want:
1. non DRM books, Dave's and others, e.g., SM Stirling
2. a reader that lets me use my monitor(from 1600x900 down).
3. a reader with minimum hardware(cost) that allows #2

As I understand it, some readers are optimized for(limited to?) specific browsers like Chrome. I have lots of room for browser apps and readers.

A lot of the search-result sites I visited seemed to have 2012 dates; where might I find more up-to-date sites on non-DRM sources and related readers?

Download Calibre. It will allow you to convert any e-book format to virtually any other e-book format so you can acquire non-DRM ebooks in whatever format you can find them in and read them in either that format or convert them to a preferred format -- I use it to convert books to Kindle format so I can read them on the Kindle.

The e-book reader that is part of Calibre is easy to use and has a full-screen mode configurable to your reading tastes.

As long as you aren't trying to deal with DRM; Calibre just gives you a notice to the effect of, "This is infected with DRM! I ain't touchin' this!"

Hi All,

Is there someplace where I can learn how to navigate at this site or within a thread?

Are there time limits/automatic logoffs? When I write a post it takes a while because I compose and edit. Twice now when I've clicked on Preview I got kicked back to Login and my post is gone. :?

As well, to add anything I have to Reply with Quote and delete the quote.
