I've been re-reading the series, and am up to WoH. It occurs to me that we haven't heard of Jean-Claude Nesbitt, Secretary of State Giancola's hatchet man since WoH. Since there is now going to be a sizable colony of treecats on Haven, and that Kevin Usher will undoubtedly going to get one, what happens if Kevin decides interview JCN with a treecat present - asking questions like "What do you know about nanotech assassination techniques?". Could provide an interesting side route to the MAlign, yes no?

Didn't honor run into him in MoH?

Why would Kevin even ask this question of Nesbitt, the Republic think that Giancola was the MA agent?

Kevin's really should be putting "State" under a microscope after such a massive security failing?

The real question is; Why's Nesbitt is still employed as head of security after his primary got killed in a preventable traffic accident.

Not that we know of. The Nesbitt Honor encountered was Tony, member of the cabinet and on the negotiating team for the Republic. IIRC, they were cousins.

Of course sometimes begin an MA agent runs in the family.

Correction--being a MA member sometimes runs in the family. Agents generally are not inside the onion, and are usually recruited/hired/bribed as individuals, not as families. Jean-Claude appears to be an agent, not a member.

Leaving aside any hairsplitting about the definition of "agent". What evidence do we have that Jean-Claude is not a member of the MA or not?
The Detweilers know of him personally, which indicates some level of importance to the MA.
And his brother is also in a powerful, which indicates a powerful family, which would fit the MO of MA sleepers.

I will admit it is circumstantial. But if he were a sleeper, I would have expected Jean-Claude to do a better job of making Giancola to do what the Alignment actually wanted.

I would expect sleepers on Haven to have been in the Legislaturalists. I don't think the people and families who are powerful now were powerful twenty years ago. It would surprise me if any Alignment sleeper families managed to infiltrate high in the new government so quickly.

Definitely ... Though I could see State resisting this and trying to play politics ...

The real question is; Why's Nesbitt is still employed as head of security after his primary got killed in a preventable traffic accident.

Why? The official report is that it was a genuine accident. So as long as Nesbitt had followed the agreed procedures for setting up a security screen, and said procedures where not substantially different from those set up for other cabinet members he's probably fine. Well, unless the Republic is big on "Never mind fixing the problem, be certain you fix the blame!" anyway. If he's on record as saying the procedures where lacking, and having been overruled by the secretary then he's probably golden ...

I wonder if Tony Nesbitt (who so far seems very honorable) has so much credibility with folks (maybe he an Aprilist or ?) that Jean Claude is more of a grey eminence a la Georgia Sakristos than we or Kevin Usher have been able to figure out so far, aka twisting Younger, et. al within their agendas as needed to keep his own dealings hidden from sight.

For example, we know that Oscar St. Just had contacts that got him to the Masadans, had to go through SOMEONE who uses Masadans, aka Mesa and Manpower... JCN, perhaps? Question is, if he's found out, who kills him first, Pritchart, Usher, Tony, or a 'cat.

Personally if I were Pritchart I'd hand him to Elizabeth and let Ariel do the wetwork.
