I seem to remember Paityr at a quite early point musing that there were probably less than half a dozen Scheulerites left in (Old) Charis. In other words they all saw how the wind was blowing and left at an early stage. Well, they weren't going to be allowed to continue as intendants, school headmasters etc, were they?

AAMOF, we've been told exactly what happened to Corisande's former intendant: he collected a trip up a long ladder and down a short rope, for ordering the torture/murder of a fellow priest.

The whereabouts of the other 4 are currently unknown, although I'd be very surprised if any of them were stupid enough to want to go home again. Come to think of it, we haven't even been introduced to 3 of them. However, I'm confident that Narhmahn, at least, nobbled his, and Charleyan is also unlikely to have been nearly as careless as Hektor was.

You are quite correct - I had forgotten about that. You are going to have to have something in place in those realms however, as you don't want Charis to be the only place that is into innovation - at least Merlin wants it to be wide-spread, which means encouraging it across the entire empire, and you are therefore going to have to have patent offices (branches) in the capital cities of the various subordinate realms that can at least give a tentative approval and patent to new ideas, subject to final approval from Tellesburg, who has the final say.

Good point. Which raises the interesting question of where they're going to find 5 more Paityr Wylsynns.

While I'm sure that there are more Wylsynnian Schuelerites around - in fact, I suspect that we've been introduced to 2-3 of them already - the evidence so far indicates that they're still loyal to the hierarchy. OTOH, said hierarchy is going to be looking at them awful cross-eyed as it identifies them so at least a few must be looking for someplace to run by now. I would assume that Clyntahn has been quietly purging the Order since he became Inquisitor - that's how Father Paityr ended up being consigned to the nether regions, after all - and the process will have accelerated since the fall of the Circle. Where are they now, and how many want, and are in a position to, jump ship?

Perhaps a problem that Nynian and the SSK can help with.

Hi Louis R,

I suspect Paityr is grooming more, and the other parts of the empire have probably been sending clerks to find out how the patent office works.

While there may not be 6 more mainland Schuelerites on Charis, the other parts of the empire probably have more left, especially locals who can fill in some of their duties and probably have been for the last few years.

Then there may be a few more from Siddarmark who have the seniority to help Paityr out.

RFC has told us not to expect him to dot every 'i' or cross every' t', because of word constraints, so if its the smart thing to do, expect the inner circle is already doing it, or trying to get a handle on the problem. ;)

I think you're overlooking Clyntahn:

You can be sure that his suspicion of Out-Islanders will be even more intense for those seeking to enter his own order - meaning that the administrators he's put in place will be catering to that suspicion even when they don't share it fully. Any remaining administrators [and recall that we don't know how long he's been Grand Inquisitor, but it's been a good while] who aren't his appointees, and those they seek to advance, will be regarded probably with even greater suspicion, since they aren't his. Nobody he doesn't trust fully will have been getting any preferment, and they've likely all been kept on a very short leash. The fact that Paityr Wylsynn was Intendant in Charis only made things worse as far as Clyntahn was concerned; the fact that he wasn't nearly as concerned about the other islands suggests that at least _his_ people were by and large convinced Clyntahnites.

Then there's the question of just how congenial a postulant who already had reformist leanings would find Clyntahn's Order of Schueler. Not very, I suspect: there's a reason why the reformists in Corisande and Zebediah are overwhelmingly found in the orders of Bedard and Pasquale, although I'd not be surprised to find the 2 agricultural orders heavily reformist as well, now at least. It would be surprising if even minor Schuelerite houses aren't overwhelmingly anti-CoC, and honestly so.

OTOH, Clyntahn _is_ his own worst enemy, and he'd probably be appalled to discover just how much reformist sentiment has developed among Shuelerites who are out of his reach. Langhorne, Schuler and Chihiro are doubtless the most corrupt of the orders, but all of them will have their share of Erayk Dynnises, people who, now that it's no longer business as usual, are honest enough to start wondering if it ever should have been. Potentially the Empire can find the intendants it needs among their ranks.

Hi Louis R,

The name seems familiar, but welcome to the bar and enjoy your favorite simulated beverage on the simulated forum, if I haven't already.

Good points!

Clyntahn was made Inquisitor General about 20 years ago, so putting his type of intendants on the islands is quite likely as you point out; OTOH, Safeholdians are relatively long lived given their ordered healthy diet and exercise regimen, so those that were already there might have been left in place because those island nations weren't considered the threat Charis was.

I suspect RFC will deal with this in a couple sentences or a paragraph at most in the next book or two.
