I am not sure how authoritative this is, but just looking at the map from where he is at, there are no east-west roads for him to use, so that would mean that he would have to cut across country without roads which might be ok for forging but would be quite slow.

I've not seen that version of the map. Could you post a link?

As to the lack of roads, yes, that's just what Hankey complains about in the quote above.

We don't know how much practice Imperial Charisian divers have had off-screen, or under what conditions. At a minimum, we need not suppose this is their first time.

The stick, if there was anything, was a small boat of some sort,

I wonder - is there anything that would keep you from having a light-weight, short periscope strapped/tied/attached to a snorkel tube? That'd give you something that would still look like nothing more than a stick if it got noticed at all, and would provide both breathing apparatus and some help monitoring location for the diver.

The same principle would apply to a small submersible, of course - I just think that the diver is much more likely for something not previously mentioned and for use in a cramped canal or river setting.

We don't actually know yet if Snippets 'Tiny 2' and 16 are related at all. But it's going to be interesting to find out, in about a week's time

it's in the LAMA book [certainly the hardback version] - shows the Kyplynger forest, and the roads thru it. As far as I know there is no on-line version [edit] with those specific details[/edit].

One aspect of that map is that David Weber likely hasn't put features on it that aren't relevant to the story at the time the map was "released for our viewing"

There's also a link to the official map that comes with its own viewer to select which part of the map you want to zoom in on and is lots quicker and easier to use at http://infodump.thefifthimperium.com/en ... hold/338/1

It's identical to the the image that fallsfromtrees linked to above, so it's still pre-LaMA I'm afraid. The jpg image he linked to failed to load in my Firefox browser, with a message that it wouldn't load because it contained errors. (I suspect that was because its size is 19 megabytes.) I was able to download the image using his link and view it using my usual software for viewing graphic files though.

However, the link I cited gives you the official map provided on this website, and since it doesn't load the entire detailed map at any given time, it's MUCH quicker to use than the 19 megabyte file and doesn't give me a loading error in Firefox. Your mileage may vary of course.

If anyone knows of an updated version of the map, which we've been begging for since MTaT, please post a link to it. ;)

Thanks All for the maps info.

I have the Fith Imperium map downloaded (and view it with windows photo viewer because that way I can get it practically full screen rather than in a smallish letterbox) and my Kindle version of LAMA has several maps at the front, including one of South March, including the Kyplynger. But none of these have any 'dispositions of forces' marked on them. Don seemed to have found a map which somebody had marked up with the various Armies' movements and that's what I was/am interested in seeing.

Unfortunately you're right that there doesn't seem to be an updated online map - see my previous post. I'd love to be proven wrong!

I haven't noticed a discussion of exactly where this snippet takes place. As I first read it I thought it was at the first line of scuttled barges at Yairdyn. However, it's clear from reading the snippet closely that not only have those barges been cleared from the river, the ones twenty miles north of Yairdyn have been eliminated as well. So this scene must be fairly close to Evrytyn, where the Dohlarans have desperately moved reinforcements in an attempt to stop Hanth's offensive, and to provide a base to which Ahlverez and his exhausted, starving army can retreat. Hence the messengers they have searching to the east in an attempt to locate him and what's left of his army.

However, Ahlverez is clearly going to be slowed down once he has to abandon the road to Thesmar, since that's held by the allies. If he's sighted, he'll be attacked by allied troops with mortars, which Hanth didn't have during the AoS attack on Thesmar, so they may come as a rather nasty surprise. At this point he doesn't know of their existence, so his first impulse might be to dig in to avoid the allied artillery - except his troops are on the verge of starvation, they're exhausted, and they're a long way from home, while they'd be facing a gauntlet of rested, well-armed allied troops.

It seems likely that Ahbraim will visit Hanth, (who has been really impressive with his ability as a commander with no help from the inner circle and OWL!) to tell him where Ahlverez is, and the most likely route his army will take in an attempt to escape the allies and reach Dohlar. (Duh, they have to reach Evrytyn and retreat using the Sheryl - Seridahn canal.) They're unlikely to manage that unless they're able to move more quickly than we expect without a high road to travel on, especially for their supply wagons. They can only move as fast as their supplies after all.

As for the scene in this snippet, it's pretty obvious that however the ICN is going to accomplish it, there's going to be a rather large series of booms in the near future that will clear those annoying barges that are blocking the Seridahn river near Evrytyn. Once those are gone, the ironclad Delthak will lead the allied offensive against the base Ahlverez is trying to reach - assuming any of the Dohlaran messengers found him and Hanth doesn't find him first. Laying siege to Evrytyn and blocking the canal into Dohlar will finish the Dohlaran contingent of the Army of Shiloh for good.

Frankly, Merlin and Hektor (who Hanth knows and trusts) should have shown up a while ago to bring Hanth into the inner circle. He needs the advantage of having satellite imagery of his enemy's location, although getting the SNARC feeds of Ahlverez's daily staff meetings wouldn't hurt either!

Ahbraim is a busy guy, and he may not have a day here and there to babysit Hanth like he did with Duke Eastshare, given that Nynian and Sandaria are in the cave at the moment and may need some oversight. Hanth should have been brought inside months ago, and it's a tribute to his abilities as a commander that he's accomplished so much based merely on conventional means.

Thanks for the link.

I had no trouble viewing the map using my "Seamonkey" browser.
