Poker Night in the Honorverse

Just a stray thought that entered my brain, it amused me and hopefully will do the same for you (and encourage you to post you own or argue with mine...)

A table, eight chairs, eight equal piles of chips, and a deck of cards....it's Poker Night.

And an interesting group we have around the table, playing Dealer's Choice.

So, who wins?

My opinion (such as it is):

Lester is the first out, his two pair (aces and eights ) losing to Caparelli's three nines. Anton plays tight at the start, then bets it all on a 10-high straight...and loses to Mike's flush. Shannon wins several hands, but then is distracted (not hard to do) and loses with a pair of Kings to Victor's nines and Queens. Mike is the next one out, gong tamely to Usher's King-high straight beating her two pair. Victor bides his time, draws a king-high flush....and loses to Kevin's Full House ("that's another lesson for you, Victor."). Three handed now, and Caparelli's slow, steady play doesn't work quite as well with only two opponensts, and Aivars takes him out, Kings beating Jacks.

So it's down to Therekov vs. Usher....and Kevin comes out the winner, hitting a Diamond Flush to beat Aivar's three Kings.

So...who would you like to see at the table...or how would you call the game I proposed?

Just something for a little fun...some of these threads are getting pretty deep.

Thomas Caparelli and Lester Tourville have been catted under orders to go no where without their cats, and I doubt the others have developed a poker-mind to go with their poker-face.

You forgot Chris Billingsley and Horace Harkness. Plus I want to play Alfredo Yu's hand, and Judah Yanakov's supposed to have developed a cold hard gambler's edge... So if you'll include them and it's not a single hand in the Texas Hold 'em tournament... because that's about the only poker variation other than straight up 5 card that I know how to play well enough to comment...

Anton does NOT go all in on a 10 high straight, particularly with the way that Henke would bet a flush

Okay, halfway through my two table tourney, 1st round...

Table 1: Harkness has the chip lead, followed by Caparelli and Tourville, with Shannon, Cachat, and Henke about the same, waiting to pounce.

Table 2: Yanakov in the lead, Usher and Zilwicki following, with Chris B., Terekhov, Alfredo Yu about the same...

Table 1:
Tourville draws a really pretty good hand (kings) over jacks and gets the 2nd pair on the flop, and goes all in, Harkness has already folded for the hand. Henke matches but goes out on the flop, leaving Victor who likely has a flush and threatening to draw it inside. Shannon however has a jack high full house AND Victor's needed card to go straight. So she goes all in, and wins the hand, taking Cachat out and reducing Tourville to a pittance. Shoulda known better than to bet against his tac witch, ya know? Two hands later and it's Harkness, Shannon, and Henke.

Table 2:
Yanakov takes out Yu in a mano a mano hand with Alfredo forced to go all in on a good but not great hand, Yanakov wins with a better hand. Meanwhile Terekhov has put both Usher and Chris B. in a deep hole with a couple of great bluffs and some good hands in the meantime. Zilwicki is still holding a strong 3rd.

Two hands later, both Kevin and Chris B. are done for, but Kevin doesn't mind. After all, Ginny's nearby and that's a win in any book, besides which now Ginny and Kevin can tease Black Victor mercilessly because Kevin lasted longer.

So we're now down to one table...

I am now not sure who to root for, by the way.

You do realize that it is only the width of the Atlantic Ocean that is going to save you because you have left out Eloise Pritchart, Augustus Khomolo and Estelle Matsuko, don't you?

Haha. I'm safe... because Hutch left them out first.

I just couldn't see leaving our remaining gamblers out of the mix! But you're right... Eloise has the best poker face in the galaxy; she fooled Pierre & St. Just plus half the PN for years.

Besides which, if Henke and Terekhov are both at the table then the Augustus & Matsuko closet-locking expedition was successfully executed, and they have ummm... how to put it delicately. Other things in their hands?

Zilwicki takes Horace out of the game with a nice three of a kind vs. Horace two high value pairs. Typical brawler vs. brains but what the heck. Horace was due for a healthy round of Old Tilman's on the Poker Night host's nickel. Who was off sparring with his wife for a while just to keep Honor sneaky and fast like Iris Babcock.

Yanakov makes his play, judging that he's got Terekhov on the ropes and correctly guesses that the good Captain is bluffing. However, Terekhov draws to an inside straight on the river and -pfft- no more Grayson's in the game. Also enjoying their Sphinxian beer.

So it's now the two ladies vs. two gents... The real betting action is now in the spectator ranks on who will take the mirror ball. Roughly even odds on Terekhov and Foraker. Medium odds on Zilwicki. Henke is the long shot. Unless there is a doughnut break, and Dicey only gets a leetle bit.

My first thought on reading this, which Zilwicki? Helen has been learning from some true masters.....

I also think Elizabeth, Medusa, Augustus and Alfred could have their own seats. All are skilled in hiding thoughts...

Although I know Dicey would clean up.
