But at least in my own mind, an oil field is a place where oil is actually being produced, whether it is actually petroleum being extracted from the ground or by oil producing plants being harvested. My useage is fairly common parlance. At least for oil field workers which is something I took a shot at, to say that a new oil field is being opened up is to say that oil has been discovered and wells are being drilled to extract it.

That's where the confusion lies. The common definition of oil field is a place where oil deposits exist, whether or not they are being drilled. You are confusing people by meaning something different.

No problem as long as in the end we get it straighted out and understand where everybody is coming from. I don't disagree with the notion that Merlin knows where those petroleum deposits are at.

I also agree they will be needed soon

Why do everyone seem to assume that using oil to power ships would require a IC engine?
Most modern warships not powered by nuclear gremlins( ;) ),
or gas turbines, use oil fired boilers and steam turbines.

Not quite, new build ships today tend to use atomic boiler, combined cycle gas turbines, or diesels (possibly like the gas turbines using hot exhaust gases to boil water). Various grades of fuel oil were the fuel of choice from ~1910 until ~1970(I think). I believe that the Iowas were among the last ships in the US Navy to have oil fired boilers, and they left active service ~1992.

Steam boiler to turbine power is still in use in the USN

Primarily for mid sized and larger ships especially support vessels
It is true that all new carriers are CVN now with the last conventional one being the USS Kennedy CV 67 with 8 Babcock and Wilcox boilers 1200 psi to four turbines to four shafts at 70,000 shp each .

Very similar engineering to the Iowa class but about 25 years newer. Same boiler manufacturer, drive shafts turned on the same lathe

CV 67 was decomissioned and placed in reserve in2007 and is slated to be replaced by a Ford class CVN
