I think that even Adoree Bedard would consider Clyntahn to be clinically insane, If insanity is defined by having one's world map differ markedly from the world, then I would disagree with you and Ms. Bédard. I think Clyntahn has a tight grip on how the world is. The way he differs from you or me is in his values. Clyntahn values a profligate lifestyle for himself, and control over others. Once those are accepted, much of the rest follows naturally. ~Tonto |

I think it's pretty obvious Clyntahn's map of reality is marked correctly, but folded wrong. The only "might technically be psychotic" thing is that he's got a tendency to forget inconvenient facts, but we don't know that's real or if it's a rhetorical tactic to keep his fellow vicars on the defensive. The rages aren't very far off someone like Al Capone; I don't think it's hard to find historical examples for that sort of abuse of power. |

Hello RunsForCelery!
BEAUTIFUL! MARVELOUS! Thank you very much for the snippet, so appropriate anytime, but especially for this time of the year. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all! L PS: All of Merlin's, Nimue's and Nahrmahn's witnesses if not testimonies are so obviously heartfelt, I'm already eagerly looking forward to Sandaria's response. I've wondered if Olivia hasn't searched the Holy Writ's sources, and be well on her way to possibly becoming a sort of neo-Christian. Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

Out of all the characters in Safehold, Clyntahn's probably the one whose head we've spent the least time in proportionate to his role in the series. (Have there been any scenes where he was the viewpoint character?) |

That's a good point; I'm glad you brought it up. It reminds me of one thing I admire about lawyers. Once the judge makes a ruling they forget anything contradictory, and allow the ruling to be their new reality. In that way they're able to get the absolute best outcome for their client. ~Tonto |

Where is this business of Rock Point being an atheist coming from? I know that Nahrman says the Rock Point is struggling in the snippet, but just prior to the Battle of the Markovian Sea in AMAF, he utters a beautiful, utterly believing prayer. I'd need some textev that would be a bit more definitive to callRock Point an atheist. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Clyntahn's willful way with recollection of facts is at least a rhetorical tactic. My guess is, he's got a way of tracking "the way things are" and "the way things I'm demanding they be treated as" both at the same time and switching as needed, to make things the way he wants them and to keep people wondering about him. The "mad dog who must be appeased" schtick gets him a long way, after all. It's certainly not healthy and it's not rational, and I don't think he's quite perfect about tracking actual and desired realities. I seem to recall some biographies of Hitler that noted a similar ability to maintain one set of apparent beliefs for consumption by just about anyone, and a more realistic one for private planning. Clyntahn's on the same model, but far higher functioning. For now. It's a lot easier juggling total world pictures when they remain either the way you last saw them or the way you want them. When they don't - some of them will get dropped, and then we get raging Clyntahn, along with a fresh wave of atrocities to vent spleen. |

We saw the scene where the Archbishop of Hankey betrayed the Circle from Clyntahn's viewpoint in By Heresies Distressed. May, 893, Chapter II. Personally, I wonder if Clyntahn is actually a PICA of one of the Archangels. It could explain why he is so sure that God and the Church are aligned with his own desires. It could be RFC's ultimate plot twist... |
