Hmm interesting discussion about the Rakurai and how/what it detects. To me it would be easier to look for EM emissions as these are most likely to attract the Gbaba. They would be easier to detect as there is much smaller amounts of "noise". On the other hand thermal detection has inherent problems as planetary movement will initiate large spikes in this (volcanoes anyone).

If we are talking about the proscriptions it is reasonable to assume that the Priesthood will suppress the majority of breaches. With the option of direct intervention by using the Schueler "key" to trigger the Rakurai for excesses. This seems to be born out by the way the church has allowed breaches that haven't triggered the Rakurai. And that the Armagedon Reef Rakurai strike was manually triggered by Langhorne and co.

It is likely that the major long term difference between EOC and AOG will come from the economies.

I read of an incident when the USA started mass production. A US company set up for mass production of small clocks. They exported to the UK, which was using the craftsman production model. UK customs said that no one could make them for less than fifty times the reported retail value, so they would teach them a lesson by grabbing them and paying them just what they had reported to customs. When the news got back to the factory, the boss said if they could get retail prices without the expense of selling and distributing them, they would increase their exports :!:

The temple is already under financial stress from events in the Safehome series. Unless they start innovating themselves, it will only get worse.

Merlin pointed this out re the military situation, but it also applies to the economic one.


BTW, the EOC inner circle should think about introducing the franchising expansion model. I don't remember anywhere they allow brand recognition in return for the franchisee learning the methods, and paying something to the franchiser. Of course there are partnerships, etc. but this method has some advantages when expanding.

Breech loading rifles were available during the ARW Google Ferguson Rifle it was a screw type drop block breech that increased ROF from 3-4 RPM to 8-10 RPM. IIRC only 1000 were built and only used in one battle (Brandywine?)> My feeling is the next big inovation will be purcusion cap firearms both revolvers and rifles. Then it will be more than likely rim fire cartrage ammo.[/quote]

The obsession with percussion-fired ammo is because cartridges were invented before any reliable *AND* cheap breech-loaders were. The British were using cartridges before there were any reliable breech-loaders. In fact, cartridges were so widely used that they were a major "contribution" to the Great Indian Mutiny of 1857 !!

A simple sliding block breech loader with a powder and ball paper cartridge is well within the "current" Charisian capabilities. It can be fired by piercing the cartridge through a pin-hole and fine powder from a powder horn poured into the priming pan and fired by a flint !!

Then again, I'm not a gunsmith, so what do I know !!

Hi Iskandar,

You seem a little behind the times.

The original Mahndrayn uses percussion caps, and its almost 2 years old now but now being replaced in the ICA by the magazine loaded M96 using brass cartridges, and converted Mahndrayns with a trap door breech.

I started off reading this thread and wondering if anyone had been reading the books. Then I realized that it dated back to 2010, prior to LAMA and perhaps even prior to MTAT.

At any rate, I think its great you guys are thinking about and discussing these issues. But perhaps you might want to page back in the threads a bit. There is a rather thorough going discussion of steam power that died a couple of months ago.

I don't want to be one to quench a good discussion with a been there done that attitude. My only suggestion, and its just a suggestion, is that usually it makes more sense to start a new thread rather than to resurrect an old one. In the meantime, have fun with this...

Um, isn't the original Mandrayn a sliding breech block design? When Thirsk watched one being assembled and dry fired it in LAMA, the Mandrayn was noted to have one.

And the Mandrayn is being replaced by a M96 which is a bolt action rifle with a ten round magazine loaded with METAL cartfridges.

So not only is a "sliding block breech loader with a powder and ball paper cartridge" well within Charis' capabilities, it's been invented, produced, and already made obsolete!
