Out of the 57 pages, I don't recall anyone shipping Hemphill and Oversteegen. And I gotta say, it is most interesting. It has potential, that ship. It could certainly make future war games interesting!

Scotty really needs to get married. His ace-boon-coon Harkness is. And I know how difficult it can be when one friend is a family man and the other isn't. It warms my heart thinking about beauty and the beast and their mates all laughing together playing bridge.

Er... "ace-boon-coon"?
As per Sonja and Shannon, I don't know if either of them are attracted to women, BUT, any male that paid attention in High School, then later college, knows that females have the distinct social advantage of being able to 'experiment' with the same sex and wake up the next morning as if nothing ever happened, as a given.

First comment - sheesh, "It was like nothing ever happened!" is NOT my idea of a positive review.... :P
"Oh baby, that was totally forgettable!"
"After you - after what we shared - I feel totally and completely comfortable going on exactly as before...."
"Last night, it was like... it was like... it was like the night before last...."

Second - for kittens' sake, some 23 centuries in the future, I am darned well going to assume that most of civilization is going to rate that as "nobody else's danged business!" between two men, either. Or between a treecat and a Medusan, if it came to that. (Well - assuming sufficient communication for consent.) (Men may be clueless, but most of us do manage to communicate consent or lack thereof well enough when we realize the occasion demands....) I'm also going to assume that, oh, 70+% of long-term committed relationships involve exactly two people of opposite sexes.
And it's enough for me to just fantasize about the night of the great experiment. After all, even though the argument of the origins of the term bff rages on, no one disputes that it has its birth in the bosom of women. And I will always support any set of girls who are bed-friends-forever.

I notice, JeffEngel, that you didn't attempt to ship Michelle. She's just a tough nut to pop, err crack, err split eh? ... Doh!
She is tricky, yes. But then again, she's got health and prolong, she's got no critical dynastic need to produce heirs, I don't think she's lonely, and there aren't that kind of sparks going off with her and anyone. I'll reject the Henke/Oversteegen ship - I will in fact hiss at it and possibly yowl - but that's my only strong opinion in the area.
You know, Alice Truman has a lot to offer. Both militarily and intimately. I still maintain that she is in possession of one of the top most tactical minds in the 'verse. She just has to believe in it herself. It's certainly in her genes.
I don't think she sells herself short. But I don't think she's got the ego to go around counting the heads of who may be ahead on the list, either. She just does her job as it comes up, large or small - and she does have the confidence not to blanch when the job is large.
But she always seems to be a loner when it comes to affairs of the heart. Perhaps it's just a matter of her not consciously realizing that she's in the closet - that she's interested in women. Could be that she surrounds herself with a bevy of blonde males because she gets on so well with them. Gets on so nicely because she's, well, one of the boys?
I peg it more as being simply self-possessed. Alison Harrington is also entirely comfortable among a lot of men and gets along with them swimmingly - and is precisely not one of the guys. It's not like that with Alice - that we know of - gracious but that would be unprofessional when she's usually surrounded by subordinates! - but I read it still as probably a matter of knowing who she is and what she's doing and being around being who are the same that way. If anything, that they are also handsome men may suggest that, even if she can't touch, she's happy to have the opportunity to look in addition to having competent professionals around.

Ace boon coon. Old term slang. My father used it a lot. Before there was a bff there was an abc.

My father explained its origin in the hunting field. When hunting raccoon, or anything else, it is best to have a hunting partner. One to spot, one to shoot. The term also applied to your best hunting dog.

If accompanied with a best friend, son, dog or man, coon hunting was a boon.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Gee-wiz, didn't know there were so many coloured interpretations of it. :o

Yeah, pretty much what I would have guesstimated from the slang of my youth, in the locale of my youth.

Pretty much a phrase to be used very carefully or avoided by about 75% of us.

IIRC that her father and brother were killed in Hassan. Therefore she has the dynastic concern of the Gold Peak title to worry about. Lends more impetus to the Henke/Oversteegen match.

No, Michelle Henke doesn't have any pressing concerns to produce any heirs (not at the mo.)

However, as a fellow Cupist, enquiring minds want to know. Why isn't she at least romantically linked? She's beautiful. She's powerful. And way past the age where the urge stokes the fire.

Obviously Elizabeth was, at least, romantically involved at a very young age. I won't entertain the possibility that Justin was rushed upon her.

It's not like it's too far reaching a possibility that Michelle could find herself Queen at a moment's notice. If right this minute another MALign sneak attack and falling debris puts Michelle on the hot seat then what?

There was a point in time I'd never have thought Honor would surpass Michelle in the dating game. Has the student become the master? A few lessons in how to use COVERGIRL cosmetics and Honor lands a married man and a married woman? Gees! What was in that makeup?! Now Honor has to give Michelle dating tips? The universe is spinning out of control.

Has there at least been mention of a romantic link in college regarding Michelle? Even Honor once dated. And she had used her one chance to traditionally wear white. ;)

If Michelle only knew, that Honor would turn out to have been a trollop in training.

(Reflexive-reflexive ducking. STOP It was just a joke. Now I know how Marchant felt.)

I can't think of anyone who would be terribly upset, put out, or inconvenienced if the Gold Peak title next landed on some distant cadet branch of the family. It's not something with heaps of political power attached, merely wealth and status.

Someone touched on this already, but I'd be very surprised if Elizabeth isn't ribbing Michelle about dating. Given how they like to lightheartedly spar.

My next thoughts would be who Elizabeth likes as a match for Henke?

I think she'd be all over a Henke/Tourville romance, even if only for the public relations bonanza that would represent. (Though not as much as Eloise, who would probably be the next thing to salivating.)

But given the way Michelle seems to have been Kaplaning her way about the known galaxy for several decades, I think she'd just be relieved to see her cousin settle down and be happy!

(And so would I. Come on, RFC - Michelle deserves some love too!!)
