We know that they have block anything that approaches the prescriptions, unless they got a big enough bribe, and they block stuff for money if it threatened someone interests.
What if charis patents everything that the inquisition blocked, but only if they can justify it, like how they justified the steam engines with pressure cookers. The fact they dont allow everythign would, help make the stuff they did more valid. If they publish this, then elowly not only does the allowed tech leak through, but to properly justify their position, knowledge of the banned tech hhas to spread. This knowledge out there would eventually be used by someone, so slowly fighting the proscription down. They dont have to share diagrams, but desciptions can be inspiring to the right person. I am betting records like these were shared, so to ensure that they were suppressed properly. |

I rather suspect that most of the blocked stuff was blocked with "It's a violation. Destroy it, and don't ever think about this again, or we will have you up on heresy charges" No detailed explanation about why it was a violation, and very little in the nature of a detailed description. It was possible to appeal a block to higher authority, but very risky to do so (we have textev of that in LAMA). ========================

Charis cannot simply approve everything that was blocked by previous Inquisitor reviews. For one thing, at least some of the things that have been blocked involve electricity! Many things are such clear violations of the Proscriptions that it is not possible to justify. Approving them would be crystal clear heresy.
There have been a thousand years of reviews. Charis can't sort through all of those reviews to find things to reverse. It could be millions of Inquisitions reviews. It makes much more sense to simply submit new things for review, the things you know will lead in the Safehold in the right direction. Which is what they are doing. The Charis patent office is already having enough difficulty keeping up with the workload they have now. --------------------------------------------

I think poor Father Paityr would have to hire more clerks to review that many records!
Some in the royal college are reviewing stuff in the Writ for warnings of judgment for using forbidden substances, especially things that go boom to figure out the reality behind the judgements. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Yeah, but in the cases of "forbidden" substances, they're not so much forbidden as "don't do X or you'll invoke Y curse from the Archangels". This backfired when Charisian scholars realized that, "Hey, some of these curses can be USEFUL!" |

In defense of the original poster, he did say only patent those previously blocked that could be justified using the dame kind of chop logic used for steam. As Electricity clearly won't fall in that category, there would be no attempt to patent electrical applications. ========================

Yes, I know that, which is why I wrote the second paragraph, which explains that there are too many reviews to sort through. The first paragraph was an explanation for why they couldn't just approve them all without sorting. --------------------------------------------

Understood, and i suspect that the reasoning behind most of the rejections is lacking most of the time. Besides, virtually anything that has been proposed earlier has either been superseded by innovations already in use in Charis, or is a clear violation of the Proscriptions, and couldn't be used (at this time) anyway. ========================

The thing is if they can use a valid argument, and cite church corruption, they could get alot of thing allowed that were baned tue to hard line inquisitors. The fact they are being select in their patents, instead of giving all the banned items permission. It needs not be a distant project, but a steady selection of items being published could be useful.
ALso, i suggested they also publish the things they are not allowing. The idea of it would spread, and people around the world, could potentially start messing around. The church us desperate, so may be willing to allow ideas that are useful or money making, so weakening the proscriptions even more. this would claw at the church, yet cant be directly blamed to charis as they are still officially following the proscriptions. Once let loose in the world, the church would find it next to impossible to remove. |
