I did in fact mean epilogue.. As in we will have to wait for the book after HFQ to find out Earl Thirsk's fate.

I think that he is shot by orders of the Inquisition and will die. The nobility didn't like him. The Church didn't like him. Even though he seems to be a 'godly' person, they die too! His pushing the edge of technology makes some in the church uneasy. Those in the army thought he was a complainer. Alvarez knows differently now, but he may no longer have a voice heard among the ruling class. He's a loser too!

Remember, the British Navy severely disciplined ineffective Captains even when major engagements were won. Rommel was executed. Effective people do run afoul their superiors.

He's pissed off the wrong person in authority over him and he has to DIE!

As I said, the ability to 'scan' ebook format is a big advantage when one gets involved in the minutia of 'fatal' versus 'mortal' in wounds. Opening up the dead-tree HB to find that specific item was not in my list of things to do in this rather busy season. ;)

I will admit I did look up my Kindle version of LAMA, but only to check I was remembering the phrase correctly. After all, 'fatal wounds' wouldn't have provoked all that discussion at the time because it doesn't leave any wriggle room for the actual events in the way that 'mortally wounded' did.

TN4994, you have one warped sense of humour! I haven't laughed so much for ages.

I must take issue with your reference to Rommel, he was not ordered to take poison because of his battlefield record, he was ordered to do so because he had known association with the 'Valkyrie' conspirators (Hitler Assassination attempt).

Still your arguments about Thirsk are VALID and history demonstrates that competent military leaders are often threatened by their less-competent superiors. Stalin and his late 1930s purge of his military is an emphatic example.

I must say that in the opus of RFC's works, there are many characters that excel at projecting an undeserved air of smug superiority and assume the attitude of a 'cocked snoot!' In this case Captain Random Izer strikes me as being a close cousin of the Honorable Reginald Houseman (The Honor of the Queen)!

I voted 2.

There I admitted I am one of those foolish trusting souls, who doesn't suspect the Chaser of a Green Vegetable of being a deceitful, lying, psychopath who enjoys throwing chum into the pool of piranhas to watch them eat each other in a frenzy.

I voted that because he was shot, and given the wording I agree it was probably a body shot and there is no Merlin around to save him.

That said.
Of course it will be RFC trickery of some sort. He snippetted it.

However I do think Thirsk is actually dead. I just think our drug dealer,(Accurate I think) is tricking us about something else.

With respect to RFC writing war porn. While he doesn't make war painless he doesn't kill off characters as often as they need to be killed of to really make it like war/life. If it was real war then both Iris and Hector would have died(And Narhmahn would be completely dead, instead of reincarnated), because in real life you don't get last minute reprieves. If you want to see a series that is utterly callous towards the readers, read the Dune series. The Butlarian Jihad is probably the best in that respect.

I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!

I have, coward-like, declined to vote as yet, but I'm inclining toward option number 2 as well. It occurs to me that Clyntahn's prejudices have been growing through recent novels, and that has caused people to begin concealing things from him, and protecting people from him. If Clyntahn should ever find out, and he has an excellent intelligence service, then issuing assassination orders is entirely in character.

I take your point, and it's a good one. An alternative, though, is that advanced technology is available to Merlin. There were wounds received during the thirty-years war that were invariably fatal. Those same wounds would have had a nineteen-in-twenty survival rate in the Korean war.

This shifts the discussion some, but I have been thinking about Clyntahn. He's got to see which way the wind is blowing after the complete destruction of one army and two more who have already been defeated and probably will be destroyed early in HFQ. He is presumably a smart man, but his motto seems to be "if it doesn't work, try it over again the same way, only harder...
