Looking at the equivalent technologies of earth and having read RFC's Out of the Dark, it is possible (highly unlikely) that our evil author may have Thirsk undergo treatment at the Mairee Cellye Abbey (a minor society affiliated with the Order of Pasquale). Brother Franc En Styin has developed a new method of bio-engineering.

Prior snippeting on "fatal wounds" of beloved characters will do that!

I'm shocked, Charybdis, shocked! How could you so misrepresent and malign our beloved and gentle author? The phrase 'fatal wounds' never appeared in that snippet. Hector had only been 'mortally wounded'! It makes all the difference in the world!

On the supposed ellipsis in the present snippet, that is also the marker for a pause for dramatic effect which is very apposite at that point. I would be surprised if it's a genuine ellipsis. Again, it just feels too obvious for Mr Weber.

The thing with sneaky is that you can't predict how it will go...

Ack! The DALLAS ploy?

:D Those of us who recognise it as such are showing our age, don't you think? :D

You do realize that RFC just snippeted the entire epilogue of HFQ untouched and in it's entirety.

I don't know about Drak, but I find the speculation in the snippet topics hilarious.

I agree, Randomiser. On a previous occasion when runsforcelery snippeted with a genuine ellipsis, he made sure to mark the ellipsis well and truly as a place where words were omitted for the purpose of concealing the plot point for a while. This snippet doesn't have that.

As I said, the ability to 'scan' ebook format is a big advantage when one gets involved in the minutia of 'fatal' versus 'mortal' in wounds. Opening up the dead-tree HB to find that specific item was not in my list of things to do in this rather busy season. ;)

I, myself, am shocked that you would use the word 'malign' in my comments about RFC. History has presented ample proof that my statements about RFC could hardly come close to the pejorative of 'malign!'

FYI: I do believe that this post will move me into the esteemed group of 400 posts - "Captain of the List!"

Are you sure you didn't mean prologue? He didn't snippet from the back of the book, after all...

Don

I did in fact mean epilogue.. As in we will have to wait for the book after HFQ to find out Earl Thirsk's fate.

Why does my mind see this scene?
Officer's briefing circa 1800's.
Captain Random Izer facing Laird Charybdis (both in battle dress uniform):
I'm shocked, (looks at food on sideboard) Charybdis, (R picks up pastry from sideboard and takes a bite) shocked! (R drinks something out of a stein) How could you so misrepresent and malign our beloved and gentle author? (R eats pastry, sips drink) The phrase 'fatal wounds' never appeared in that snippet. (C (who has been drinking ale) picks up meat, pickles, etc. and bread, making a sandwich. All the while looking patronizing at R.) R (having picked up a celery rib) continues: Hector had only been 'mortally wounded' man! (Points celery at C for emphasis) It makes all the difference in the world!
