Read - Friday by Heinlein that cheerfully refers to other universes. I loved the bit where they entered E.E Doc Smith's Lensman universe and had to retreat quickly as "they are super heavy on drugs here".
In an infinite universe with Heisenberg's Uncertainty Theory anything is ultimately possible.

Outlines in a composition tablet.
Someone asked about a second Ark project for Safehold.
Several authors use a travelgate or Stargate.
ER Burroughs- John Carter on Mars has one in an Arizona cave.
Let's extend the link, and have additional transportation sites throughout the world.
One on Long Island in a certain Half-Blood camp.
Maybe another in the Elf kitchens of Hogwarts.
Perhaps a noble space race saving animals and forgoing the humans?
The cave of The Forty Thieves?
You get the idea.
Oh, it works really great if you're telling stories to children.
They really contribute their own spin.

Oops, methinks you went one book later for the scene you quote as I do believe that it comes from "The Number of the Beast" (1980). While this was not his best and I believe that he said that he was feeling his infirmities and age, it did build upon his "Time Enough for Love" (1973) and his obvious affection for Burroughs and Baum. "Friday" (1982) also built upon his previous work as it takes in characters from his 1949 novelette "Gulf".

For me, even though "Number" has a LOT of detractors, I prefer it to "Friday" which was nominated for the top SF awards. I guess that I like the concepts of fictons and Barsoom where the British Raj reins and reigns upon the plains 8-) !

- THE ENGINEER TRILOGY - K J Parker

When an engineer is sentenced to death for a petty transgression of guild law, he flees the city, leaving behind his wife and daughter. Forced into exile, he seeks a terrible vengeance -- one that will leave a trail of death and destruction in its wake. But he will not be able to achieve this by himself. He must draw up his plans using the blood of others...
In a compelling tale of intrigue and injustice, K. J. Parker's embittered hero takes up arms against his enemies, using the only weapons he has left to him: his ingenuity and his passion -- his devices and desires.

I'm reading the Richard Castle Heat series books.

Castle is the ABC TV show about a Writer who follows a Detective around for inspiration for his books.

The Heat Series books are the books that the Character Played by Nathan Fillion writes during the show. Written by Ghost writers but following the story line of the show, the Character writes the actual books which you can read while watching the TV show. It is pretty Cool.

Castle is a natural language script that has the Actors speak as if they were just talking rather than reading lines off a script. It is refreshing and makes watching other shows painful. CSI is like watching a show were the actors are just reading lines Castle is like they are there and it is real the books add to the realism and it is great.

Kind of James Bond ish and Tomb Raider ish and with a hefty dose of what you can write but can't show on TV.

Much like your looking for a book to read between books these are books you read between the TV show seasons.

Rather than books, I am going to recommend three web-comics (that I happen to faithfully read them regularly is just a coincidence....)

First and Foremost is SCHLOCK MERCENARY, which has now been published daily on-line for 14 years, and all the strips are available in the Archive (warning--it will take you days, if not weeks, to wade through the entire collection--but it will be worth it.

    Find here: http://www.schlockmercenary.com/

Second is GIRL GENIUS. Understand, I don't like Steampunk; don't read it, don't follow it, have nothing to do with it. But this wonderful (3-times weekly update) comic is unabashedly Steampunk..and I love it.

    Find here: http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/

(and PS, if you can find it in the 'Other Comics' section there, give a look to "Buck Godot, Zap Gun for Hire")

Last is STAND STILL, STAY QUIET, and post-End of the World tale from a Scandinavian viewpoint. It is impressively artistic, somewhat slow-paced, creepy as hell...and utterly wonderful in it's characters and story.

    Find it here: http://www.sssscomic.com/

And while not a satisfying as a book--or a series of books--they will give you something to follow on a regular basis whiel awaiting the next book by the MWW.
