Well, if you think it's a good idea . . . .

________________________________________________

Ahlvyn Khapahr looked Thirsk in the eye.

“I’m very sorry about this, My Lord,” he said quietly. “I’ve always deeply respected you.”

Thirsk looked back at him . . . and Khapahr squeezed the trigger.

The heavy bullet hammered the earl out of his chair in a crack of thunder.

:P

I'm not sure what it is yet. I usually like to lurk a while so that I get a chance to hear some of the really great insights you guys have on a regular basis before I choose a side. I am prepared, though, to take a stand about what I believe it isn't.

I've tried to imagine an escape attempt by Thirsk that required him to fake his death. So I go to Ahlvyn and say, Ahlvyn, I need you to shoot me so people believe I'm dead. Now, it takes some convincing, but I finally get Ahlvyn to buy into this scheme. Okay, so now I'm Ahlvyn. I go into Thirsk's presence and say something. If other people are present I say something to convince them I really want Thirsk dead. I say, "Thus always for Tyrants!" Or I say, "God wills it!" I don't say, “I’ve always deeply respected you.” Okay, so what happens if no one else is present. Under that circumstance I say, "I sure hope this works out the way you think it will." Or I say, "Are you ready?" I don't say, “I’ve always deeply respected you.”

So here's what I'm prepared to claim. Ahlvyn is not in on some scheme to help Thirsk escape the inquisition.

Except by avoiding torture.

Maybe a daring rescue can be pulled off. Thrisk by Merlin, his family by Aviah's agents. She has probably infiltrated Thrisk's servants so that might be doable. At least it is conceivable. Aviah's agents could stash Thrisk until Merlin could pick him up, hopefully alive. or not.

Is Thirsk the only Earl in the room?

Those are suspicious eclipses.

I didn't mean to imply that there wasn't a scheme to rescue Thirsk from the inquisition. Only that, if there is one, Ahlvyn isn't privy to it.

Voted #3 because I realize just how devious RFC can be.

I suspect that #2 is more likely, but I've been wrong too many times to try to predict what is coming next.

I voted for number 3 because I don't think it is a sneaky escape, he is too devoted to his country, and what happens to his family when he resurfaces in Charis?

I don't think it is number 2, because, among other things, he is not, at least in these forums, a beloved character (more likely the opinion would be, couldn't happen to a more deserving person, too bad he didn't get to suffer more), which I totally disagree with.
